She was different to any student he had ever come across. She was quiet, read books, didn't party, but behind the silence was a sadness that radiated from her. It was as if he couldn't help himself, he wanted to be what she needed. The only problem...
Faye Dawson I was nervous. So nervous that I didn't want the plane to land in Toronto and wished that it would just keep circling until I got less nervous. "Stop biting your fingers you're making me nervous just by watching you" Shawn said grabbing my hand holding it tightly in his. "How far is your house from here?" "My house or my parents because I planned on dropping all our stuff off at my house first" Shawn said as the plane came to a rough halt. "Oh ok" "It's not far" Shawn said and I nodded trying not to give in to my nerves.
All the time we were waiting for our bags and sorting out passports I grew more anxious to see what would go down with Shawn's parents. Shawn was unusually quiet and I guessed that the situation was pulling at the anxiousness inside us both. When we got out of the airport I cuddled into my jumper. I was wearing a denim skirt with a vest and pink jumper tucked into the skirt. We got into a taxi and began the journey to Shawn's house.
When we arrived I couldn't believe his house. It was so pretty. It was a large place but looked to be cosy as well as modern. I loved it. Inside it was a very modern style with large windows and a marble style theme like his house in England. He showed me round the place and took me onto the roof where chairs and a table stood overlooking the city. It was beautiful. But I could imagine Shawn getting lonely in such a big place. "I love it" I sighed sitting down on one of the chairs on the roof. "So so I. It's nice being back here after so long. And it's nice that I'm here with you, someone I love and I care about so deeply" Shawn said holding my hands. The sun had just started to set leaving a golden glow in the sky. I looked to the city and back to Shawn who was down on his knee. "What the fuck are you doing?!" I gasped as he pulled a box out of his pocket. "It's not a proposal. Yet. It's a promise. I love you so much and I promise to you that after all these mistakes I've made that I will be loyal to you and care for you like a princess which is what you deserve. And before we go to my parents I want to go in there knowing that we're in this together and I want to be with you for many more years to come" Shawn said opening the white box to reveal a silver ring with a red love heart on the top. I held out my right hand but he pulled my left one towards him and slipped it onto my ring finger. I smiled and blushed as the ring went on. "Shawn this is beautiful. I love all of this. Thank you so much"I said getting on my knees and planting a long kiss to his lips. I wrapped my arms around him and hugged him tightly, enjoying the feeling of his large hands pressed against my back. "I'd love to stay like this forever however I think we need to bite the bullet and go see my parents" Shawn sighed and we stood up.
"Can we just turn around?" "No" "Faye-" "No" I laughed. As he pulled into a driveway. "Wait this is it?" I said looking out the window. Shawn nodded, stopped the car and pulled on his leather jacket. "I feel slightly ill" I said as he opened my door for me. "Yeah well it must be contagious. Come on. Look they're going to love you. It's me they hate" Shawn said and I put a hand on the back of his neck. "I love you" "I love you too" He said kissing me quickly.
With his hand resting on the small of my back we walked up to his parents door. I stood behind him as he cautiously knocked on the door. He took a step back and I took his hand in mine as he put it behind his back. We waited a few moments before the door was opened. I closed my eyes for a brief second before an English voice spoke out. "Shawn?" "Hi mom" Shawn said back and I heard almost a sort of sob before arms were thrown around him. I smiled and took a step backwards. I could see Shawn stiffen as the crying continued but still he wrapped his arms around the woman slowly. "I didn't know when I would see you again! We've been worried! And we've missed you Shawn!" She said and Shawn nodded. "I know and we can talk about it all but first I have someone I'd like you to meet" Shawn said moving to the side so I was revealed to his mother. "Hi" was all I could manage to squeeze out. "Oh! She's British! Good girl" She laughed and straight away I felt comfortable. "Sorry. Hi I'm Karen" "Faye" I said shaking her hand. "Well. We've just made dinner do you want to stay?" Karen asked and I looked to Shawn but I could see he would say no so I stepped in. "That would be lovely. If it's ok with you?" I smiled and she nodded. "Of course. Your father's not home yet Shawn. But he'd be happy if you stayed so he could see you. He'll be back in an hour" She said and Shawn nodded not saying a word.
We walked into the house and I heard music coming from upstairs. "One second" Karen said before going up the stairs. "She's lovely" I said and Shawn smiled. "I know. Wait till you meet my sister" Shawn said as the music stopped and more than one pair of footsteps came down the stairs. This is where I got nervous. I'd be certain that she would be the hardest to impress. I kept a smile on my face but held Shawn's hand with a shake in my own hand.
"Shawn?" The girl said running to her brother enveloping him in a tight hug. "I missed you" "I missed you too" he said. Already I could see that she was just a little taller than my five foot six frame. "Are you his girlfriend?" She turned to me and I nodded smiling. "Faye" I said holding out my hand. "Aaliyah" she smiled taking my hand. "I love your eyeshadow how did you do that?" I said marvelling at her makeup. "Oh it's a pallet I got from Sephora. It's so nice" she told me. "We don't have Sephora in the U.K. we can't even order online" I said and her eyes went wide. "No way that's shit" "Trust me I know" I laughed and she smiled.
I looked over at Shawn who came and put his arm around me. Something good was finally happening, both of us were so happy and I know that this is how I wanted things to be for the future.
