Faye Dawson
We were silent. Neither of us knew what to say. I had never sat through a more silent drive than I did on the drive to the airport with Shawn.
It was hard driving the man I loved to the airport knowing that I would eventually have to say goodbye to him.
Shawn didn't say anything to me either. Occasionally I would hear him take several deep breaths and open his mouth as if he were going to say something, but he didn't.
I couldn't blame him. This was a big deal. He was moving back to his hometown and had to build everything back up over there.
But i knew it would be hard for me as well. I was going travelling on my own. Experiencing new things without him.
My trip was almost all planned out now. Two months in America. A month doing charity work in Africa. A month in Japan and finishing off with a month going round France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
It was a long trip but I was looking forward to it. I was staying in hostels and just backpacking it. For the experience.

As I parked up in the airport car park neither of us got out immediately. I swallowed hard and smiled at Shawn before sadly climbing out of the car.
"I'll get it" Shawn said as I tried to lift his case out of my car. I nodded and moved away. "We still have an hour together so do you want to get lunch?" He asked.
"I would love to" I smiled taking his free hand in mine as we walked into the airport.

It was surprisingly difficult to watch Shawn's bag get taken away as he checked in. Once that case went it all became real that he was leaving.
"Where would you like to go?" I asked trying to keep the mood light.
"Well there's an Italian over there which looks quite nice" Shawn said pointing it out. I nodded and once again held his hand in mine as I knew I wouldn't be feeling his touch for a long time.
We sat down at a more secluded booth and I cuddled up to Shawn as we looked at the menu together. Once we had ordered, I tried to talk to Shawn calmly, knowing we didn't have long left together.
"So. What are you planning to do when you get there?" I asked pushing out a smile.
"Do we have to talk about me leaving you? I'd rather not" Shawn said frowning.
"I think we have to talk about it Shawn. I want to know what you'll be doing. You know what I'm doing" I said and he sighed but eventually nodded his head.
"I'm planning on working at my old university actually. Teaching English Literature" Shawn told me and I smiled knowing that he was doing something he would enjoy. "Are you going to be ok on your trips? You have all your shots done?"
"Shawn I'll be fine. I have an appointment for tomorrow to get all my shots. Please don't worry about me I'll be fine." I said as our food was placed gently on the table.

"Right then. Do you have everything you need?" I asked as Shawn and I stood just outside of the security gates.
"Well I think so. If not you can mail me things" Shawn said and I nodded trying to hold back the tears in my eyes. "Don't cry Faye, if you cry then I'll cry."
"I'm sorry" I said and a few tears fell before I couldn't hold back the flood anymore. More and more tears fell from my eyes and I couldn't stop them. I tried with everything inside me to stop them from falling but I couldn't.
Shawn took me into his muscular arms and just held me. I felt the odd tear drop land on the top of my head as I snuggled into Shawn's chest for the last time in a while.
"I'll miss you" I whispered.
"I'm going to miss you too" he whispered back. I gave him a last squeeze before pulling away from him.
Lovingly, we looked in each other's tearful eyes before meeting each other in the middle for a long, loving kiss.
"I love you" we both whispered.
Without another word Shawn pulled away, smiled, and walked away through the security gates.
I knew he wouldn't turn back to me. Turning back would be too hard. Yet I secretly hoped he would. Just so I could look at his face, his smile one last time.
