"Knock, knock," I heard a voice say. I opened my eyes to find that I was laying on a floor with a blanket over me and Jack standing in the doorway, smirking. I tried to figure out where I was, and then remembered falling asleep on the floor next to Race. I looked around and found him on his bed, still sleeping.
"Can I come in yet? Race wouldn't let me in after you fell asleep on our floor directly in front of my bed, so I had to bunk next door," Jack said with mock annoyance. "I need to get ready, and so do you. Scoot down to your room or I'll get someone else to help me drag you there." I got up and rushed out of the room and down to mine to get ready for school. I checked my phone that I had left in my room the previous night and saw a message from Sami.
Samster: I can't walk with you guys tomorrow. My mom's driving me.
I was fine with that. Nobody needs drama first thing in the morning.
I met up with everyone in the third floor parlor for breakfast ( even though the others weren't hiding anymore, we had gotten used to eating up there, so we kept it up for breakfasts) where I was relieved to discover that Jack had the decency to make sure Race had gotten out of up after I was out of the room.
"I'm sorry for keeping you out of your room, Jack. I didn't plan on sleeping on your floor," I said sincerely. He just shrugged it off, and I felt better about that. "On an unrelated note, Sami won't be walking with us today. She's getting a ride." I said a moment later. Race looked relieved about this and after breakfast our caravan set out to school. I had my brother walk in front of our group, where he was having a conversation with Katherine about a homework assignment. I hung to the back, and Race followed suit. I could tell something was on his mind.
"A penny for your thoughts?" I asked with a mixture of concern and playfulness.
"She got a ride because I'm here. Maybe I am stealing you from her," he said.
"Nobody's doing any stealing. She's just being immature. I choose who I spend time with, so if anyone's stealing me, it's me," I replied, trying to be reassuring. "I mean, I must be some sort of thief, I stole the path to Jack's bed last night and he couldn't get through without stepping on me." The last part caused him to crack a smile, which made me smile too. Sooner rather than later, we arrived at school. I asked Race if he wanted me to walk to first period with him to like glare at Sami or something, but he said he'd be fine, so I headed to my class.
At lunch, I was afraid that Sami would come and try to start something at lunch, but instead she went and sat with some of her dancer friends instead. I was secretly glad about that, but also felt immediately guilty about feeling that way. The rest of us came to lunch and sat down, clearly noticing and ignoring the absence of Sami but not mentioning it. I could sense the discomfort around the table, so I decided to start talking.
"There's a back to school dance coming up for the middle and high school kids. It's on Friday," I said. Everyone brightened at that thought, and I knew that I had said something good. The girls and I made plans to go shopping for dresses after school, and before we knew it lunch was over.
