About a week after the fall festival, I started to get Halloween on the brain. I already had my Galinda costume ready; Sami and I had worked on our costumes over Spring Break the year before.
I decided to bring up Halloween to the others, seeing as none of them had costumes, had mentioned Halloween, or, I realized, even knew Halloween existed.
"Hey guys, Halloween is coming up," I said, and got the expected blank stares from everyone, with Jack pretending to know what it is, just like he pretended to know what a statement of purpose was. Before anyone had to be the embarassed one to ask what Halloween was, I explained it.
"Halloween is a holiday where kids and teens dress up in costumes and knock on peoples door to get candy," I explained, and after seeing understanding flood their faces, I continued. " You all get to pick what you want to dress up as and then we will head over to the mall to find costumes and the likes."
Everyone started thinking then, and I answered questions left and right. Soon, everyone had decided what they wanted to be. Eponine thought it would be funny to dress as herself, Katherine and Jack had been recently reading my brother's old comic books and were going as Wonder Woman and Batman, Winnie was going to go as a woodland fairy, Jesse was going to go as Peter Pan, Cosette was going asher mother, Fantine, as a tribute, and Race, after consulting with me and some catalogues, decided to go as a scarecrow.
We headed up to the mall, and, like when we went dress shopping, we split up. This time, we broke into three groups, with Katherine and Jack splitting off to go together to make sure their costumes are in the same style.
First, our gaggle of girls went to find any regular clothing pieces needed for our costumes. I found the last thing I needed for my costume, pink sneakers, Eponine found a new top and pants to go with her already existing coat, hat, and boots, Cosette found some light teal sneakers that matched the color of most Fantine costumes, and Winnie found a strapless green dress covered in wildflowers and green sneakers.
Next, we went to a costume store to purchase the more costume-y elements of the costumes. Cosette managed to find a replica of one of the West End Fantine costumes and Winnie found a pair of light up fairy wings.
We met back up with the others in the food court like the time before and grabbed lunch before going home to model our costumes for each other; everyone wanted to see mine especially.
We put on and showed off our costumes quickly before putting everything into garment bags and hanging the costumes up. I felt a wave of sadness like the one before the fair; this was something Sami and I normally did together. I must have done a better job hiding the brief sadness this time, because nobody noticed the wave. I wondered how many more moments like this would come before we either made up or I stopped caring. I hoped it wasn't much longer.
