We all piled into cars to head to the school. (None of us girls wanted to walk a mile and a half in our fancy clothes.) My brother, Katherine, and Jack got into my brother's car to go pick up two of my brother's friends, whom Jack had also befriended. The rest of us piled into my mom's minivan. The car had seven passenger seats, so Cosette, Eponine, and Winnie piled in to the very back, Jesse and Race sat in the middle row with one empty seat next to Race, and I hopped up front next to my mom.
"Alright Mom, we're ready to go," I said after everyone had piled into the car.
"Ok, but we have to pick up Sami before we go. Her mother called last minute and asked if I could drive her over, and I couldn't say no. I haven't seen the dear lately, is everything alright?" my mother said, instantly changing the mood in the car.
Before anyone else got a chance to respond, I said, "Sami's just had a lot of plans with dance friends lately. It's alright, though. We can share her with them. We don't own her friendship, after all."
We drove along in silence until we reached Sami's house. My mom made me go up to the door and get her, much to my distaste. When she came outside, I was amazed at her total transformation. She looked like a darker version of her dancer friends, with her jet black hair straight down her back, and a sparkly and lacy black mini dress. She had on black heeled boots wrapped in thick gold chain, and she wore a Maleficent style dragon pendant around her neck.
"Um, hi," I said, but she ignored me and headed down to the car where she proceeded to start up a cheerful conversation with my mom. She hopped in the front next to my mother, and I got in the middle row seat next to Race, who I could see was glad that she ended up sitting up front. I squeezed his hand to relax him, and I felt most of the tension leave him.
The rest of the ride was mostly silent, apart from Sami telling Winnie all about school dances, seeing as Winnie wasn't mildly annoyed, at least, with her like the rest of us. The tension in the car was so thick, you could slice it with a knife. When we finally got out of the car, and my mother had gone, Sami shot me a look and headed away to find her dancer friends in their matching outfits in all colors.
Before we got a chance to forget about Sami and go inside, Winnie asked, "What was that about?"
We all had a silent discussion about whether or not we should tell her, with Jesse's convincing silent argument about telling Winnie things being a good idea winning out, and so I said, "Sami didn't like how much time I spent with Race over the past few months, so she started being really rude to him. Katherine, Jack, and I took his side in the argument, she WAS being really irrational, so now we aren't speaking. That's why she's only been talking to you, Jesse, Cosette, and Eponine."
Winnie nodded her head like she understood, but I saw her face fall a bit.
Hurriedly, I added, "You can still talk to her and hang out with her if she asks you to. You have no real reason to be mad at her; she hasn't done anything to you." I was met with a happier nod, and we all headed inside.
When we got to the check in line, we found Katherine and Jack and waited with them to get inside, filling them in on the car ride and just after it. When we got to the front of the line, we checked in and the teacher at the check in offered a sign up for a guy's fashion show to the boys. We convinced them to sign up, telling them how fun it would be. They semi-begrudgingly signed up and we went into the dance.
