==================================
"You have to pray for your mother that she would understand the desires of your heart just like Jesus understands you."
Napatingin si Jeremy sa nagsalita, his ever understanding father. And though their mother had been a controlling factor in the house, she always still submitted to her husband the way a wife should be because that was what the Bible said.
His father was his pillar after God. He had been the Man of God from the start. It had always been God on his throne. His father had learned how to speak Tagalog because all of them took the lesson together when them, the kids, were young. She didn't even look like she would submit to you in any way."
Napatingin siya dito. "Pati ba ikaw?"
Umiling ito. "No, unlike your mother.
"The woman like Althea didn't know how to submit to their husband. Especially the working women like her. May sarili silang buhay at pag-iisip. They are very independent.
It had only been more than a month since I met her at ngayon palang kami magkakakilala ng lubusan. But if Mom open up that way, sino namang babae ang gaganahan sa akin?"
Napailing si Eri.
"I don't know how Althea knew about submission to parents and authority no matter what but it gave me an idea that she knew what we had to follow in time."
"Pero hindi ka pa sigurado. I know that Althea is thinking that you don't have a relationship with each other as of the moment and you are building only friendship to start with. And because of that, she could withdraw anytime."
That scared him. "Don't tell me that, Pa."
"I am telling you the truth."
He took a deep breath. "Then what would I have to do?"
Tinapik siya nito sa balikat. "You two talk. Tell her about your plan and what you really want. And tell her why you wanted to be with her. Girls love that."
Napangiti siya. "You like her?" He looked at his father hopefully.
He looked back at Jeremy. "She is not for me to like, but like your mother, I want you to have the woman of God to marry. After loosing Melissa, you deserve someone better if not like her. And it could be worked out with anyone. I hope that before you and her decide on anything else, Althea would be the woman of God that you deserve."
He had a long thought on that.
"You don't know how I feel."
"I do, believe me. But you don't have to worry about that. Normal iyan sa mga magulang."
"I thought they aren't judgemental."
"They are not judging you, Thea. Nakatingin sila kay Jeremy sa ngayon and you don't have to blame yourself on that. Pamilya iyan ni Jeremy and they want a woman of God for their son. Once you fully understand Christianity and you become a mother, you would understand that."
She couldn't grasp that.
"Believe me, tinatanggap ka nila bilang tao. Kay Jeremy sila concern and maybe that is because Jeremy had let them feel that he wanted to spend a lifetime with you."
She gasped on that.
"See, ikaw ngayon ang hindi makapaniwala."
"Wala naman siyang sinasabi na ganyan."
"Hindi kailangang sabihin. You have to understand where Jeremy and his family stand as of the moment. A Christian man wouldn't date a woman if he has no intention of marrying her from the start. Iyan naman ang maipagkakapuri mo sa kanila. They are not playing. Kaya huwag kang magtaka kung bakit umaalma ng ganyan ang pamilya niya thinking that you are an unbeliever."
She felt so small now. Wala man lang siyang pamilyang magtatanggol sa kanya. She felt alone for the very first time in her life. This saddened her big time.
"Don't feel bad, I know na marami ka pang dapat malaman tungkol sa pakikipagrelasyon ng tama and it doesn't feel right a lot of times. But you are in there already. Kung ipaglalaban ka ni Jeremy then fight for him also. Pray. God is with both of you."
Her being new to this was making her feel so vulnerable. And she didn't know how to fight for this. But if praying would correct all of her feelings, then she would pray until the morning.
"Thea, do not feel bad. Be with Jeremy. Have compassion on the man. I'm sure he wants a life with you. Forget about the world and remember that you have the ace because Jeremy is with you."
She wanted to say amen, but she didn't know how. So many things were gnawing on her. God help her.
"Oh, sige na muna, just enjoy there. For anything tawagan mo ulit ako. Do not do any drastic decision na alam mong puwedeng makasira sa inyo ni Jeremy ng hindi ka muna tumatawag sa akin."
Napangiti siya. "Thank you."
"Sure, patulugin mo muna ako at may lakad kami ni boyfriend bukas.
She laughed and thought that was so sweet. "Sige na, salamat ulit."
"No sweat, God bless you."
"You too."
Sophia hung up and she stared at the wall for a very long time.
