PRAYER CHANGES THINGS

They were at the corner of Althea's private room after the tests at the emergency room. His Uncle Danny was a Christian and also a Filipino.

And he learned everything.

He almost died of heartache. Not again. He couldn't absorb what was going to happen.

Althea literally declined chemo to give way to the baby. It was also when she contacted him. He did a mental calculation of everything that had happened when they weren't together and arrived to that clear conclusion. His wife contacted him upon realizing that she was dying.

She opened her eyes. She looked healthy to him though she was really weak. Itinaas nito ang kamay at hinaplos ang pisngi niya. "You look sorrowful," she whispered.

Hindi siya makakibo. Gusto niya itong tanungin at sisihin for putting him on the blind side of everything but he didn't want to increase her pain. "How do you feel?" mahinang tanong niya dito.

She blinked. "How's the baby?" she asked instead of answering his question.

"The baby is fine," sagot niya dito. "Do you feel any pain?"

Umiling ito. "Just tenderness inside my body."

He nodded trying to grasp his sanity with everything that had been going on.

"Sorry," she said while her eyes watered.

Pinigil niyang mapaluha. "Kaya ka ba bumalik sa akin?"

"I love you," she just answered. "It is so wrong to stop communicating with you. There is no reasoning enough to cover that."

That was more than enough. Hinalikan niya ito sa pisngi. "I love you too," he whispered to her. "Will you, will you accept chemo?" napapikit siya nang sabihin iyon remembering their baby inside her. "We could have more baby, but you..."

"One baby is not the same as the other. This is what we have right now. Kahit pa magkakaroon tayo ng maraming anak in time kung mabubuhay lang ako. Papatayin ba natin ito?"

He couldn't argue with that. People are all individual and so as the child in the womb. Niyakap niya nang mahigpit ang asawa. "Tell me what you want me to pray for you."

Diretso ang sagot nito. "No pain..."

"You got it, baby..." and he cried again for the first time after fourteen long years.

"Those are all herbals to help boost her immune system. You can overdose her with those. Your baby will be healthy too. They say it kills cancer. Maybe it could."

"It could improve her health and lessen her ability to feel some pain. Hindi na siya mapapagod lagi. It will help with her being. Of course aside from prayer."

Napatingin siya sa ina. "Lalabas na kami bukas. Ayaw na dito ni Althea."

Tumango ito. She looked away.

She looked back at him. Her eyes were watery. "After you got married at umuwi ng Pilipinas si Althea ay tumawag siya sa iyo at nakausap ko dahil iniwan mo sa labas ng kuwarto ang cellphone mo. I took the call." Huminga ito ng malalim.

Kinabahan si Jeremy.

"I asked her to have a quiet time with God first before going back with you."

He held his breath.

"Sinunod niya ako."

Hindi alam ni Jeremy kung ano ang susunod ng gagawin. He wanted to loose his self control and scream to the top of his lungs but morality told him not to do so.

"Pagbalik niya dito ay sinabi ko sa kanyang maari niyang sabihin sa iyo ang totoo but she told me to forget about it."

Everything made sense now.

She appreciated what I did. She said it draw her closer to God that she wasn't scared to die now."

He remembered almost the same conversation when Althea asked about Melissa. And instead of questioning his mother, his question was pointed on God again. "Bakit ganun, Ma? Do I really have to go through this twice? And this one supposed to be more painful than the other?"

Hindi makasagot ang Mama niya. Pinahid nito ng palad ang luha.

"Could you help me talk to God and ask?"

"Anak, tandaan mo na ang Diyos natin ay buhay at naririnig ka niya. He created heaven and earth. He breathed on people to live. He takes life and he rose dead from their grave. Kaya niyang panatilihing buhay si Althea. Have faith in him."

Jesus!
