Days passed, and with every passing day, Y/N only grew more worried about Steve. Though communication channels with him were open, they were limited to restricted use. Everyone around her noticed how she felt.

Sam and Y/N had just finished their third training session of the week, he saw that Y/N seemed off and wasn't being herself.

"You know, you shouldn't be worried, Steve will be fine," he reminded her as she sat down.

Y/N nodded slowly, "I know, but for some reason, I still worry about him...call me crazy."

Sam shook his head, "That's not crazy, that's love," he told her.

Maria Hill then stepped into the room, catching glances from both Sam and Y/N. However, she never met Y/N's eyes, "Hey, Sam?" she asked. "Can I speak to you for a moment?"

Sam nodded, following her out into the hallway, "What's up?" he asked. "Do you finally have a solo mission for me?" he asked hopefully.

"No," Maria told him. "You know you can't go on solo missions yet."

"Yet, is the keyword in that sentence," Sam pointed out.

Maria turned to face him, a serious look on her face, "It's Steve," she answered.

Sam furrowed his brows, "What about Steve exactly?" he questioned. "Is he okay? Is he hurt?"

"We don't know," Maria replied. "Steve missed his past three check-ins."

Still confused, Sam continued to ask questions. "Communications are limited, I don't see how this is a problem?"

Hill sighed, "Yes, communications are limited to restricted access, but Steve was still supposed to check in two times a day...he has missed his last three check-ins," she explained, worry laced in her voice.

Sam stood silent for a moment, fearful for his friend. "Have you told Y/N, what does she make of all this?" he asked.

Maria shook her head, "I haven't told her, I don't need her worrying about him more than she already is."

"Steve said that this mission was going to be easy, in and out...that is what he told Y/N."

"He said that so she wouldn't worry," Hill added. "The mission wasn't that difficult, but circumstances could have changed, something could have happened."

"Are you sending someone after him?" Sam wondered.

Hill sighed, "No...not yet. Because for all we know his communications could just be down. It could be nothing..."

"But it could also be something," Sam warned.

"Don't tell Y/N, this is the last thing she needs right now," Maria told Sam. "Right now, we need to just let things be. I only told you so that you could keep Y/N calm, don't let her find out what's happening," Maria said walking away as Y/N came into the hall.

Y/N turned to Sam, "What was that all about?" she asked.

Sam shrugged, "That was me trying to get my own solo mission," he chuckled.

Y/N smirked, "Yeah, let me know how that goes," she said walking away.

----------------

Two weeks passed, and Y/N hadn't heard anything about Steve's mission, she should have received an update by now. Steve should have been home a week ago, he had been gone for nearly three weeks.

Y/N tried to remain busy, to distract herself with other things, but all of her efforts proved useless. She couldn't stand it anymore, growing frustrated, she stepped into the living room and saw Sam on the couch watching TV.

"Hey," he greeted as Y/N sat down beside him, a serious expression on her face.

"What do you know?" Y/N questioned.

Sam turned to her, brows furrowed, "About what exactly?" he asked.

"Steve's mission," Y/N replied flatly. Though Sam confused look remained, Y/N knew he was lying. "You know something..."

Sam sighed, regretting that he couldn't keep what Maria told him a secret. "Maria told me something about Steve's mission a few days ago."

"What?" Y/N asked. "Sam...please, I have to know."

Sam looked at her with sadness in his eyes, "Steve missed his past three check-ins about a week ago, he's missed all of them since. Maria doesn't want to send anyone in yet, she says that it is more than likely nothing and that we shouldn't worry."

Y/N shook her head, "But what if it is something."

"Steve told you his mission was simple, in and out...that's not the case," Sam told her.

"I know," Y/N replied. "He didn't want me to worry, so he didn't tell me what he was really doing. I hacked into the file, he was doing recon on a Hydra base, strictly gathering intel. He was supposed to report back a week ago, then a team would fly out and take down the base."

"You knew?" Sam asked her.

Y/N sighed, "Of course I knew," she told Sam. "I also know that Steve should have been back a week ago," she added.

"You're going after him...aren't you?" Sam asked.

Y/N nodded, "Are you coming with me?"
