Steve's sleep started out peacefully, but it didn't last long before he fell into a nightmare...
He found himself back in the Hydra base, the team all around him taking down Hydra agents left and right before they got confirmation that Y/N had the files and was making her way out. That's when Steve saw the building collapse, the concrete crumbling, the dust creating a thick haze over the area.
Steve's shoulders dropped as he remembered that Y/N was still inside...
A silence fell over the team as they all watched Y/N rise from the rubble in the distance, completely covered in dust and blood. Her face bore a number of cuts and scratches, and her suit was nearly torn into ribbons in several places. Blood dripped down one of her arms. As she continued to step forward, she limped a bit, favoring her uninjured leg. Y/N looked like she had fought Death...
Y/N dropped to her knees before Steve, "Why didn't you save me?" she questioned. "You were supposed to cover me..."
Steve then heard his name being called out over and over again as he was slowly pulled from his nightmare and back into reality.
"Steve," Sam repeated. "Dude, wake up," he said shaking Steve's shoulder lightly.
Steve opened his eyes and immediately straightened up, he looked around before rubbing his tired eyes. He sighed softly as he realized that he had been in the middle of a nightmare. "Are we in Wakanda yet?" he asked.
Sam shook his head, "Not yet, but we're close."
"How is she?" Steve asked, his gaze shifting to Y/N.
Sam sighed, "Not good, she's getting worse," Sam told him.
Steve put his head in his hands, "I should have stayed with her, I left her and then this happened. I should've been faster when I was trying to pull her out of the rubble, I should've been better."
"Steve, you didn't do anything wrong, you did everything you could," Sam told him. "That's all any of us can do..."
Sam was silent, he was unsure of what to say next. The two sat quietly for a moment, each of them just needed a minute to relax.
Steve perked up when Y/N started whimpering softly, her eyes slowly opening. "Steve?"
Steve was on his knees by Y/N's side in an instant, "What's wrong?" he asked Sam as he tried to comfort Y/N.
Sam shook his head, "I'm not sure, she shouldn't be awake," he answered. "But her vitals are all over the place. What the hell?" he muttered to himself before rushing to her side.
"Steve," Y/N choked out between heavy breaths.
Steve leaned closer to Y/N, his fingers brushing gently over her cheek, "I'm right here, Y/N, right here."
Y/N cried out in pain, Steve gently turned her head towards him. "Look at me," he told her softly. "You're gonna be okay, just look at me. What's happening?" Steve asked; he could see the pain in Y/N's eyes as she struggled to breathe. Y/N reached out aimlessly for Steve's hand, he grabbed her hand and held it tightly.
"She's losing her airway," Sam explained. "Did any concrete fall on her chest?" he asked.
Steve shook his head, "I don't know, maybe, it's possible."
Sam then took off the top part of Y/N's suit only to reveal severe bruising all across her chest. "Damn," Sam said to himself. "We're going to have to put her on a breathing tube."
Steve took a step back, giving Sam some room to do his job. Steve couldn't help but feel responsible, he's the one who convinced Y/N that this mission was a good idea, he's the one who suggested that she tagged along. It was all his fault...
