JIM STARED AT the man standing on his roof with a look that screamed 'wtf'. "Um... Tobes..? Is that you..?" Jim was suddenly extremely thankful that he hadn't asked if it was Draal or Arrrgh, because it was actually Batman.
"James Lake Junior." He said as he landed in front of him, cape settling around the entirety of him, the bottom pooling slightly, yet flaring around the man flawlessly (seriously, how does he do that?). "We need to talk."
Jim shifted uncomfortably, looking equal parts defensive (A.K.A., ready to run at any second) and nervous (which is understandable- it's Batman). "Um... about..?"
"I think you know exactly what."
Jim made a split-second decision and decided to go with the cover Toby, Claire and himself had concocted on half truths and a steaming pile of bullshit. "I really don't, but okay, let's just go with that." He said in his usual awkward, bewildered and sarcastic way as he walked up the driveway and put his bike away in the garage. The slightest feeling of a hand slipping into his pocket sent him into action.
Without thinking, Jim grabbed the hand and pulled forward, under his armpit, expertly twisting his wrist as he blindly sweeps the person off their right foot so that it spun with the matching hand to be back to the floor, Jim's foot subconsciously finding the throat and immediately pressing down hard, the opponent's hand held in such a way that he could easily give them a spiral break.
Shit.
It was Robin.
"What was that?" Batman said dryly, as if he was asking Jim to repeat his answer to his previous question.
Jim barely spared his peripherals, keeping a trained eye on Robin. "...You gonna try stealing from me again?" He asked warningly, letting the fellow teen know that if he even heard the slightest bit of 'yes' in his answer, he would break his arm.
"No!"
Jim removed his foot and let go of his hand. He watched the boy like a hawk, glaring at the two once they were side by side, Robin seeming to be trying to decide whether he should massage his throat or wrist.
Jim desperately wanted to cross his arms but decided to keep his hands in his sweater pocket instead so he could reach his amulet if needed. He didn't know if it would do anything to humans, but if worst came to worst...
Tap.
Tap.
Tap.
Swipe.
Batman narrowed his eyes at the pattern.
Some light thundering Jim wouldn't've heard if he wasn't the Trollhunter told Jim that Draal was going upstairs.
A shriek echoes from the house, which was quickly cut off.
The two looked torn between going after whoever was inside and staying there.
"It'll take both of you either way." He comments chillily.
They tensed.
Slowly, Jim backs up to the workbench, picking up a chisel. He flips it a bit in his hands before simply saying, "I'm used to something a little bigger, but I can still defend myself with this."
The standoff continued for about a minute before the two leapt into action, seeming to have decided that Jim was a bigger threat.
Jim fought hard, managing to keep himself from landing on his ass, but that certainly didn't mean he wasn't hurt. He could feel at least two bruised ribs, one forming on his diaphragm, he had a cut through his eyebrow (that he just knew was going to scar (at least he had a reason for his mom, though)) that was bleeding into his eye and the other was bruising from a roundhouse kick Robin caught him with (he returned the favor breaking the upper half of his leg and severely twisting his ankle. He wouldn't be getting up anytime soon). His back would be one big, black-and-purple mass in the morning, and he could feel one of his disks out of alignment (and it wasn't from his backpack). [1] Despite all of this, Jim kept holding out (and back- he was slowly regretting that) though.
That's when the beautiful sound of sirens cut through the chilly night, making the two jackasses vanish.
Jim never thought he would say, "Thank God-- the police."
[A/N TIME!
1) I've actually done this. It hurts like a bitch and it was from the reason listed, so anything where Jim seems a little bit too knowledgeable about something, it's probably because I have it. My health sucks. 🙃
2) I'm going to go ahead and post this (yes, I'm aware the numbers are inverted in the chapter), but I don't know when I'll be able to post the next one.
OKAY, I'M DONE.]
