Steve's father was abusive. He is not in the house any longer, but it could not have been long.

MEGAN
OMG! Is he okay?!

That explains a lot... how's his mom?

KALDUR
She is a strong woman, but she is lost and buried in her fear.

ROBIN
Figured. Jim's father walked out the day he turned five and Eli's parents are divorced on his mom's request. His dad lives across town. He took it out on people who were in similar situations to him, the only difference being that their moms were there for them.

CONNOR
Jim's dad walked out on them?

WALLY
Yeah. According to Toby he went to be a ski bum in Vermont.

WALLY
Speaking of Vermont, let's talk about Arnold.

I agree with Zatanna and Aqualad. There was something off with his mind, something I've only come across with magically powered beings. Whether or not that's the case remains to be seen, but it's a lead. If we can break into Jim's mind, we'll know everything.
