I cleaned up the dust with a straw broom that was laying around to pass the time. Since this was his vacation space, he was most likely staying at home by now. I opened the door and let the wind take the dust as I swept it out of the cottage.
Their were other vacation cottages scattered around, too. But no one seemed to be in them, since the school year started.
I sat down after I finished cleaning up and turned on the television, only to see everyone talking about the incident that took place three nights before.
There were no cameras that had any images of what happened that night but they were interviewing people in the cabin and whenever they went to talk to the students from my class, they would just walk away. Axel pulled Luna away from the cameras when it seemed like she was tearing up and the girls and boys were in groups just staying away from the cameras. Zachary looked at the mic for a moment and opened his mouth to say something but shook his head and moved away from view. Well, except for Jason.
"Well, she always did want to be a hero because everyone else wanted to but never could. It's in her blood, I guess," he spoke.
"Well, do you think the police will be able to find her?," the reporter inquired.
"They probably won't be the first," he said simply then looked at the camera directly. He knew I was watching.
I hugged my legs to my chest and buried my head in them as the reporter continued to talk about super villains. He interviewed a cop as well and to be honest, I would have loved to kill him.
"See, villains are villains and can't be anything else. They're monsters, they won't change. If this girl thinks she can be a hero, that's probably impossible with her bad blood. There was a splotch of blood that was left at the scene and we won't say which one but she was related to a villain this entire time. She was really doomed from the start. Besides, she wrote on her application that she had no aberrant, what makes her think she could ever be a hero?"
Stupid cop thinks he knows everything. My brother is a superhero and he thinks that I can't be one just because I punched someone in the face. He does it all the time, that's what a hero does.I turned off the TV and laid in bed, closing my eyes. I started to doze off when I heard a creak. I shifted in the bed and continued to take a nap until I felt eyes on me.
I opened one of my eyes and saw a pair of dark blue ones framed with red glasses looking back at me.
"Why aren't you turning yourself in?," he asked.I jolted up and leaned back against the wall. "What? Who are you?"
He stood up and sat on the bed. "My name is Kody, how do you not know me?"
Ah, Kodiak.See, you should remember their names.
Chance was leaning against the door frame and smiling nervously.
Sorry, the topic of you slipped from my tongue.I glared at Kody. "Why, do you thing it's easy to turn yourself in?"
"Sure it is. Walk into a precinct and say "I punched a guy in the face and knocked the other one out. Please arrest me now"," he mocked.
"Why are they making it such a big deal!?," I shouted. "I barely did anything."
"Did you even listen to anything I said?," Kody said. "If it's not that big of a deal, then turn yourself in."
"Well have you been watching the news?," I shot back. "They knooooo- I mean think that I'm related to a super villain."
"Well, are you?"
I glanced over at Chance and he shook his head.
"No . . . Of course not."I slid off the bed, pulling down part of the covers. "But that's not going to stop them. And I can't stay here for long. They'll search this entire district now that they assume this."
"Well, it can't be a super bad villain, right?"
I caught Chance's eye again and he started speaking. "Well, you see, a little over a week ago, I came across Liz as she was coming back from that really big jail where they keep the biggest villains. Turns out she went there to meet the Black Devil."
"Well that's loads of shit," he said. "No one can meet the Black Devil unless it's for security purposes."
"Well...," Chance went on.
"THAT'S WHY I WAS THERE," I spoke over him. "I was there because I'm a cop assistant."
Kody scoffed. "That's not a real thing."
"Sure it is. They teach you stuff and you . . . Learn stuff . . ."
Kodiak just sat there with a serious look on his face. "You're kidding. I would not believe that for a second."
"Why not?"
"Your speak, your posture, the fact that you keep lying to me."
"I'm not lying to you."
"There it is again!," he pointed out as he threw his hands up. "I live with a mom who's job is to lie, her living comes off of fortune telling. Sure she knows what'll happen in the future but she makes it so everything that ends up happening just brings her customers coming back. I know a lie when I hear it."
Chance sat on the bed and pulled a bottle of water from his bag. I took it and sipped from it as Chance talked.
"We need to get you out of here, but first, we need to disguise you. You've been wearing the same clothes for the past 72 hours. They are starting to stink."I flipped my finger at him.
"Well, what are we waiting for?," Kodiak said as he pulled me up.
"Wait, we're leaving now?""Yes," they said in unison.
"Yeesh, okay."I put on my shoes and followed the boys out the door, closing it behind me.
