Luna's POV
We all watched as Mr.Blake steadied himself by his desk and search the class. He had a dazed look in his eyes and he wore a heavy hoodie and black sweats.
"We all are probably hung up on the fact that one of our classmates are a traitor but we need to ignore that. We still have work to do if we are going to shape you guys into heroes."
He gestured for Jenny to come up and set a stack of papers in her arms to pass out. The packet was thick and included the physical and mental properties of each of our aberrants.
"Each of you will study these packets and by the end of the week have practiced and can use at least 25% of your full potential."
We all groaned but stopped abruptly when the door slammed open. Axel walked in with a limp, wearing a baseball cap, a large baggy sweater and loose jeans that were airy around his ankles.
My jaw dropped when he took off his cap. His burn on his face had took a turn for the worst and had become more red, as if he just received the scar yesterday. I could feel the atmosphere in the room tense as Axel laid his head on his desk, as did Mr.Blake. As most students would take advantage of the teacher having their back turned, we all stayed in our seats and studied the packets.
"They shouldn't have come to school if they were injured," Adalwolfa whispered to Adley.
I just kept my eyes trained on Axel. It was only a few days, how did it get so bad?
I hesitated before reaching in front of me and rubbing his back. He shifted a bit but settled down when I touched the back of his neck. As everyone silently chatted, I dragged my chair next to him and held his hand. "It hurts?"
"Don't ask me stupid questions," he replied.
"Then should I take you to the nurse?," I said. He lifted his head, his eye closed shut because of the injury. He got out of the chair and I followed suit.
A few of our classmates looked up at us and I assured them we weren't skipping class. I gripped Axel's hand as he stopped to take a breather by one of the windows.
"Why did you come to school, Axel?," I spoke. "It wouldn't hurt you to miss one day."
"You don't understand, shortie. Me being me, I would have to come to school in order to earn all criteria to become a hero." He looked down with the same frown on his face. "You know my history in school."
"Why do you have to do it on your own?," I asked. "Why do you act like everything has to be carried by you alone?"
"Because it does!," he yelled. I narrowed my eyes at him so he could get the signal to lower his tone. "Luna, you don't understand."
"Oh come on," I spoke. But before I could say anymore, Axel was already limping away. I followed him and he just leaned against the wall instead of using me for support. I looked down and put my hands behind my back. He opened the door to the nurse's office and went inside but I said out. He obviously didn't want me in there.
I sat on the ground and held myself with me knees resting my head. It took many minutes for Axel to get treated but I waited patiently. I had not much to do but study a packet in class anyways.
"Aren't you supposed to be in class?," said a voice with a curious, yet playful tone.
I looked up and Jason was looking down at me with a frisky look in his eyes. A girl with ginger locks and brown eyes smiled at me, holding a bunch of papers under her arm.
"I'm uh, just waiting for s-someone," I stuttered.
"Then you should wait in the office with them, no?," said the girl.
She couldn't see the tense atmosphere between Jason and I. After what he tried to pull at the trip, my instinct was to keep my guard up.
"Why are you guys out, anyways?," I countered.
The girl and Jason exchanged looks. "Cause," he said. "That's what members of the student gov do."
Of course Jason was apart of the student council. I forgot entirely since he didn't seem to fit the role.
"Okay, my turn," he said, patting my head. I flinched under his hand. "Who are you waiting for?"
My first instinct was to lie to him but something was preventing me from doing so.
"I-," I hesitated, before blurting our why I was there."Axel's in there. He has a serious issue where he gets random burns all across his body. I was trying to help him get rid of them but they only seem to be getting worse."
He nodded, not seeming to be satisfied with his answer. He put his hand on the girl's shoulder and they both started walking away.
"Be careful, Luna," he warned.
For what?I rubbed away the severe headache I was having and decided to go into the nurse's office. I opened the door and saw Axel looking through the window as the nurse typed something up on the computer.
"How is he?," I asked the nurse.
She looked at Axel who whipped his head around when he heard my voice.
"It's not good," she said. "The heat builds up in his body when he doesn't use his aberrant. If he does end up using it after so long, he'll most likely have no control of how powerful his ability is going to be. But I'm going to have to get him assigned to someone out of school. I don't have the materials here to actually see what's going on inside him."
"What'll that do to my chances at becoming a hero?" I glanced at Axel. He still had that angry look on his face but his hands were tightened into tight fists to the extent where his knuckles turned white.
"Depends on the results. As a hero, you will be able to use your abilities quite often but with how fast your body is being damaged currently, you won't be in the best health to be a hero. But then again, I'm not the best person to be getting this information from."
Axel yelled and left the room in frustration. I quickly thanked the nurse and ran after him. He was stomping down the hall, not seeming like he had an idea of where he was going.
"Axel," I called after him. "Axel stop!"
He didn't stop so I ran and blocked his path. I stretched my arms out and looked him in the eye. He narrowed them and grunted.
"Get out of my way, shortie."
"No, stop being so infuriating," I stated. "The nurse said she's not a credible source, don't jump to conclusions."
"She said!-" His voice cracked and I was stunned.
"Are you about to-"
"She said that I can't be a hero!," he yelled. "Do you know how long I've wanted this? It was my dream ever since I could damn read! And I thought my aberrant could take me there but it's pulling me back!"
Axel pushed me aside and started walking towards the exit.
"You wouldn't skip class Axel," I told him. "That's not you."
"Yeah," he said. "Well who's gonna stop me?"
He pushed the doors open and stuffed his hands in his pockets as he walked off.
