The reports had wound down to being updates every fifteen minutes, then to every half hour, and now to every hour. She had watched the footage so many times she had memorized it. None of it showed Micah, and she couldn't decide if that was a good thing or a bad thing. She was too anxious to sleep but too anxious to do anything else either. So she sat on the couch, watching the news and waiting for an update that wasn't a rising death count.
Bastet was curled into a ball on the cushion next to her. The cat had remained close to her since the first newscast as though she could sense how upset she was. She appreciated the support in an odd way, but didn't try to pet the cat for fear of pushing the fickle creature away. She didn't think she could handle being alone.
She had passed from denial to anger to bargaining with whatever higher power was listening. She promised to be a better person, to apologize to Mara, to tell Micah how she felt, to do many things she wasn't sure she was capable of actually doing. All they had to do was give him back to her.
The night wore on and passed into day. The city was still reeling and mostly locked down, so it wasn't like she had anywhere else to go. The channel she was on went back to its regular programming and she switched to a twenty four hour news channel.
