I've shown this ship a lot in Gay Memes but I might as well show what it's like in writing. So, this might seem like an odd ship, but it weirdly kinda works soooo,
Third Person
"Chester?"Ace kept his eyes down and fiddled with his hands. Chester know the gesture like the back of his hand. Ace was embarrassed.
"Yes?" Chester nodded for him to continue, turning his body towards him. Ace always did need reassurance he was being listened to, and fortunately, Chester knew when to give it.
"I- uh- it's not- it's not like I don't know the word but..." Ace took in a breath, steadily looking him in the eyes. "What's the definition of love? I know what it is but... How do I know I feel it?"
The question caught Chester off guard, but then again, Ace never ceased to surprise him. Thinking to his family, Chester found the right words eventually.
"Love is... Someone who cares for you, even in weakness,"
Joe's soft hands carefully wrapped around Ace's shoulders, holding him close. A storm raged outside, and fear of never being able to make it back to Atlantis in their hearts.
Ace couldn't stop shivering, teeth chattering and making him feel like they'd fall off. Joe's feathers kept him from being the same way but still had a cooler feel to them.
He felt Joe wrap a blanket on top of his cape before resuming holding him. "It's alright, I got a fire going and an extra blanket- you'll be back to normal before you know it!" Joe gave the best smile he could manage.
Ace knew he wasn't really as confident as he was appearing, he could see his smile wavering even now. But it was helping and even if he wasn't sure why he was trying so hard, Ace liked it.
But, moments passed and Ace didn't feel different. His chill wasn't wavering, and panic seized his heart.
The words left his mouth before he could even process them. "Am I going to die?"
He could feel Joe's heart leap out of his chest. "No!" Joe's grip tightened, springing pain in his side. "You're not! I won't let you! Stop talking like that!"
"But-"
"I said you're not!"
Joe snuggled his head in the crook of Ace's neck. It was for warmth- obviously, Ace couldn't think of any other reason- but the thing was... Ace found a strange comfort in it.
Something about feeling safe in someone else's care, and feeling their heartbeat against yours...
"I've got you. You're not dying on me."
It made Ace believe it for himself.
"Or when they see you at your worst and don't run."
Ace's lungs wheezed, aching with pain. He toppled to the ground. There was a ringing in his ear and voices he could hear arguing about something.
Of course he knew what it was. Just thinking about it made his body go limp, unwilling to get up. His eyes closed, drowning in pain and noise.
"-and I told you! Dangerous! Look at what he did!"
"Just because he's wrong you in the past doesn't mean he's still guilty of those crimes, Cody!"
"I didn't say that-!"
"But it's still in your head, isn't it? It's like every time he makes a mistake, you're on him for it!"
"This wasn't just a little mistake! People got hurt! WE got hurt, Joe! He freaking exploded on us!"
