Chapter 39- This Can't Be Happening

Jake, my dad, Bethany and I are on the set of my favorite talk show. It's the Nick and Cathy show I really love their show they're so funny so being on their show is a dream come true. Jake has a concert right after this so literally as soon as we leave here which would be around seven we have to go straight to where he's having his concert. We're standing backstage Jakes holding my hand I looked at him and smiled he kissed me. I looked on set and saw four high chairs, a glass table with coffee mugs on top and behind them are screens which has the show name on them in bold orange and pink letters the live audience is taking their seats a man holding a clipboard ran out "two minutes!" he hollered Jake and I walked out on set I sat beside Jake and Cathy while Nick sat beside Jake. Nick has brown hair and green eyes he has a dark complexion and is very tall Cathy has brown short hair with brown eyes with a light skinned complexion just then the man with a clipboard yelled "action" and a light appeared on top of the camera,

"Hey! I'm the fabulous Nick"

"And I'm crazy Cathy"

"We have two very special people with us" Nick said

"And they are Payton Miller and Jake Thomas!" Cathy added

The camera is pointed at us and we waved the audience clapped and cheered

"Wow!" Nick exclaimed "they love you"

We smiled

"It's great to have you two here" Cathy smiled

"It's great to be here" Jake smiled

"Yeah it's really an honor" I smiled

"Now you two are known as the 'power couple'" Nick said

"How long have you two been dating?" Cathy asked

"I'll let Jake answer that" I laughed

"Four amazing months"

"Is he right?" Cathy asked

I nodded

Cathy squealed then hit a button on the table that dropped down multi colored paper strips. Jake, Cathy, Nick and I are covered in confetti I couldn't help but laugh just then Jake gathered some from his neon yellow top and black denim pants and threw it at me I looked at him with my mouth opened he copied me,

"I love you" I smiled

He kissed me "love you too"

Nick and Cathy just smiled.

Towards the end of the show we took questions from the audience,

"I have a question for Jake" a girl said "when you're not on tour and in the studio what are you doing?"

She smiled and sat back down

"I'm mostly just hanging out with my friends and my beautiful girlfriend"

A male stood up "this is for Payton...I heard you did a lingerie photo shoot and I was wondering can I get a picture?"

I smiled and straightened out my red dress I looked back at the guy,

"I didn't do a lingerie photo shoot and even if I did it would be a no"

"Ok we have time for one more question" Nick said

A lady in her late thirties stood up,

"Payton Ray Miller where is your father?"

I laughed nervously "excuse me?"

"It's me your Aunt Karen"

I just looked at her you could feel the awkwardness in the air.

The show is over and I went to go see my dad. I overheard him talking to someone,

"There's a reason why I haven't been returning your calls!" he yelled

"Oh really?!" it's a lady

"I've been busy Karen!" he snapped "I'm a hard working man I try my best to make my kids happy so you can't say I don't take care of them"

"We'll just see about that" she snapped "I've seen pictures of Payton in the magazines she's not looking to good"

"she's fine!"

"That's not what the judge said"

I felt a hand on my shoulder I turned and saw Bethany,

"Come on you have a show to go to"

I nodded and we went over to my dad,

"Hey Jason" she said

"What?" he snapped

"I'm taking her to the concert she goes on at eight"

"I know"

"Love you dad" I went over and hugged him

"I love you too" he said

I let him go and went with Bethany.

I'm about to go on stage. Fans are chanting my name but I can't go on yet my dad isn't here and I'm starting to get worried. I asked around if they saw him or knew where he was at and they all shook their heads "I can't perform without him here" I tried not to cry because I would ruin my make up my sister came up to me,

"You're on soon"

"No I'm not going on without dad here"

"You have to"

"Not without dad" I said while crossing my arms over my chest

"Payton" it's Bethany "the show must go on"

"But-"

"Your dad's not always going to be here sweetie so your going to have to do things without him"

"What are you talking about?" I asked confused

"Nothing just go out there and put on the worlds best performance!"

I exhaled "I can try"

I put on my headset and walked out.

After I performed I ran backstage and hugged Bethany,

"I did it!" I looked at her and she started crying but they weren't happy tears "What's wrong?" I asked,

"I'm just so proud of you" she cried

I hugged her again. Something is wrong and I don't know what it is.

I'm back at my house. I walked through the door and saw my dad sitting in the chair with his face in his hands I saw my aunt sitting on the couch I ran over and hugged my dad,

"I did it!"

"What did you do?" he asked

"Well I was really upset since you weren't there to watch me but then Bethany told me that the show must go on so I went out and performed my butt off"

He looked at me and smiled. His eyes are red as if he's been crying,

"That's good"

I saw a tear escape his eye,

"Dad what's wrong?" I asked while sitting on the couch

I looked at him then my aunt. I noticed my suitcases at the door and plane tickets beside me,

"Are we going on vacation?"

"Payton please don't make me say it" he started to cry

Karen moved closer to me and I moved away,

"I'm just coming out and saying it" she said "you're moving with me to Arizona"

I swear I heard my heartbreak.

"this can't be happening"
