"You're breaking up with me?"
Josh's heart feels like it's being split down the middle. Literal cracking and crashing sounds, split in two and shattering into a thousand shards of pure angst. He can almost hear the danger, low health! music playing in his ears.
Debby won't meet his eyes. Her lips are pursed almost into a frown, cherry red and beautiful. He wishes he could kiss them one last time before she leaves, but that's not an option anymore.
"We're just not good for each other," she says to the cracked, off-white ceiling of his cramped, shared apartment. Her arms tighten their grip on the corners of her coat. "I have dreams bigger than the two of us. Please don't make this any harder than it has to be."
Even in a living room they'd spent countless nights together in, watching movies and making love, she stands out like white paint on a black canvas. A metallic white coat hangs off her shoulders and brushed against the floor, her stiletto boots making small indentations into the shaggy toffee brown carpet. Her hair, now dyed a natural red, curls in ringlets around her face. She still refuses to look Josh in the face.
He knows why she's doing this. Josh can see Brendon standing just outside of his door, a smug ass grin plastered across his face. It's just a matter of believing it's from her own free will.
Debby brushes the side of Josh face with back of her hand, her black manicured nails cold against his skin. She lets him lean into it, as if giving him to remember her by. When she pulls back, cradling her hand to her chest, Josh feels empty.
"Debs, please-"
"It's Radio Rebel," she corrected, shaking her head slightly. "I only go by my stage name now. See? This is why we won't work."
Josh reaches out for her, wanting to ask for her back, but she's already gone. The door shakes in its frame as she slams it. He stands there, not knowing what to do next.
"God damn, she fucked you up good," a drunken laugh comes from behind the floor him, where his two roommates had watched the whole thing unfold. "Guess you're not moving out?"
"Shut the fuck up, Jon."
