CHAPTER ONE:
JOSH DUN WAS DATING A HIGH SCHOOLER
"Josh Dun is dating a high schooler?"
The extent of apathy in Hayley's voice is so tangible it's almost laughable. Max paces the room in yet another anxiety fit, his electric guitar slapping against his back as he spins around.
Young Ryan- Seaman, they call him Young Ryan he's not confused with the older Ryan Ross- is lying across their ragged, coffee brown couch that they stole from a garage sale. He looks up from his 3DS for the first time since their band practice started to stare at Josh with awe.
Even though he's not an official part of their band, he acts as their manager/sound system man because they're too poor to hire and Young Ryan doesn't get paid.
Plus, he's their only fan.
"You're dating a high schooler?" He asks.
Josh rolls his eyes and doesn't respond, pulling a coffee mug out of the cabinet and shoving it under the sink. When he turns around, he sees Hayley fold her arms from where she sat on her drum set.
She's had that same drum set since she was fourteen, using the money she earned selling lemonade and dog sitting to buy it for 600 bucks from Creepy Marlin down the street of her house.
Despite the excessive wear and tear from the six years she's owned the drum set, they are currently all too broke to pitch in for a new one. Her floor tom is practically ribbons at this point in time. Their utter brokenness is also the reason why they had band practices in the living room of Josh and Max's shared first floor apartment and not an actual studio.
"How long have you been out of high school, Joshua?" She mocks. "Like, ten years, right?"
"I'm not playing your little games, kids," he stays back just as mockingly, turning back to the sink. He flips the faucet on without looking and fills the cup almost to the very top before thrusting it into the microwave, setting it for two minutes.
There are no teabags. Young Ryan drank them all, he remembers, and opens the microwave before the time even goes before a minute thirty.
Max grabs the mic stand and starts dragging it along with his pacing, rambling about how the hell they were going to get gigs when nobody knows who their band is. Young Ryan returns his attention to his DS. Hayley still won't let it go.
"How old are you now, like thirty?" She asks, her voice monotone yet still insulting.
Josh scoffs and turns around once again, propping his elbows on the counters. "I'm twenty two, okay? Twenty-two." He holds up two fingers on each hand to prove his point.
