Again, I am so sorry for the long wait.
And I really hope you all are still reading and stuff.
Anyway....
Here we go.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR!!!
---Luke's POV---
"But Luke, it's been three months and you're home again. I can take the distance, but I know that Nikki and Michael are struggling with it. Are you guys coming back here any time soon?" my girlfriend said over Skype.
"I know, Lydia. And I'm trying to convince him to go with me. But he thinks that Nikki won't want him after all this time apart. He IS rather insecure, not that he shows it," I told her. "Who knows, maybe he will decide to go. I can't make him." I sighed and checked the time.
"Babe, it's late over there, you should go to sleep. Call me when you wake up. I'll answer no matter where I am," I shook my head when she attempted to protest. "Please?"
"Fine," she giggled, agreeing. "I love you, Luke."
"I love you, too, Lydia."
I blew a kiss to the screen as the little sound went off, hanging up the Skype call.
"I miss you..." I whispered, sighing as I shut the laptop I was using. I stood from the chair I was in.
Being back home in Australia wasn't the same as before. It didn't feel like my real home anymore. Lydia did. And I knew that I wouldn't truly be home until I was with her...as cheesy as that sounds.
I knew Michael felt the same way...if not more intense. He wouldn't talk to anyone anymore. As soon as we got back, he went to his house and holed himself up in his room. No one knew what he was doing in there, not even his parents, who asked me to go talk to him today. I had agreed and thats where I was going now.
I slipped on a pair of thongs and headed over to the Clifford household.
As soon as I got there, I knocked on the door and Mike's mom let me in.
"He's in his room..." she said softly, with concern laced through her voice. I nodded and hugged her quickly before heading towards his room.
I knocked and pushed the door open.
"Michael?"
He was on the bed, just laying there, staring at the ceiling, an open notebook and his acoustic guitar on either side of him. He didn't look up when I came in or when I said his name. The look on his face was heart wrenching. It was that of a heartbroken man.
I knew the feeling.
Distance was something that was hard, especially when it had to do with someone who you were truly in love with. And I knew that Michael was deeply in love with Nikki.
"Michael?" I said his name again, moving his guitar a bit so I could sit down. Before I could though, he pulled it into his arms and strummed a few things, a thoughtful look on his face, before setting it down and grabbing the notebook.
"I've been writing..." he said painfully.
I heard it in his voice...
He was broken.
And I knew the only person or thing that could fix this would be Nikki.
"Oh?" I asked, curious, but more hoping he would talk to me more.
"Yeah, I finished the one song we were writing... I was going to call you and have you over to listen, but my parents called you first..." he shook his head slowly. "I know they're worried, but they don't understand. But you do, Luke."
He sat up, pretty quickly, startling me a bit.
"You know what it's like...or at least a little...Luke?" he looked into my eyes intensely.
"Yeah, Mike?"
"When are we going to see them again?" His breathing hitched a bit, hopeful as well as scared. I didn't realize how bad he had gotten...
"I'm not sure. But we're off right? We can just go whenever we want to. Maybe even surprise them!" a smile lit up my face, just thinking about it, and Michael brightened up a bit, but then shut down again.
"I haven't talked to Nikki in two days..." he whispered.
"Why?" I asked, finally sitting next to him.
"Because I'm scared...and she hasn't texted me either...."
"Maybe she's scared too... Michael, you have to text her, or call her. She's your girlfriend. And she's waiting for you."
"How do you know that!?" he said, suddenly. "I bet you that she's already found someone better. Someone who can be there for her. Someone who can love her more. Someone who isn't pathetic, or lives halfway around the world. Someone who isn't me. I'm not saying she's cheating, or that I don't trust her...I don't trust myself. Because I'm not good enough for someone like her. She's perfect..." he trailed off and lay back down, tears falling down his face.
"Michael Gordon Clifford, you listen to me right now. That girl loves everything about you. She tells Lydia all the time, and Lydia tells me because she's my girlfriend. Nikki talks about you constantly. About your hair, your eyes, your laugh, your smile, your humor, your everything. She loves you more than any couple I have ever seen and I KNOW that you feel the same. You two are perfect for each other, so stop bringing yourself down, and convincing yourself that you aren't worth her love and start making sure you are. Be a great boyfriend, the one that I know you can be to her. And the best thing you can do? Come with me when I go surprise Lydia in America. I bet you Nikki would be so happy," I told him. He looked at me, shocked, for a few moments and just shook his head, smiling.
"Thanks, mate. And I think I will."
"Good, now about that song...."
