"Forty are dead, along with over thirty five wounded after the terrorist attack on the police academy around eleven this morning. Among those killed were trainees for our police force and Captain Michael Dodson. The attack was said to have been carried out by Hypothermia."
Logan groaned, flipping open his laptop. "Why didn't I get this? I hacked into the security system at the police academy."
I put my head in my hands, rubbing my eyes. "I wouldn't have been able to do anything anyways, I'm only one person."
Although I was back on board with being Voltage again (Which, by the way, I hadn't done anything yet because crime was surprisingly quiet before today) it didn't mean that I could do all this stuff by myself. With Aubrey AWOL and Jason still in the hospital, there wasn't much I could do without getting myself killed.
Or worse, captured.
I shivered at the thought of being arrested and having to go on trial just to be found guilty then locked up for the rest of my life, my whole reputation, everything I had worked for, and any chance at a normal life gone. It scared the shit out of me.
"I don't get it, Hypothermia's goal is to fight corruption, not the police academy. Don't you think by now some scandal would've been revealed?" Logan inquired, looking up at the TV.
"Now that the council has given more funding to the police forces to fight against Hypothermia, they have to start defending themselves." I said. There has always been a lot of tension between the police and Hypothermia, but now they were really acting on it, and winning the fight.
"Shit." Logan murmured, typing away furiously at his laptop. "Hypothermia put up another firewall, but it should be easy to hack into." He snorted. "Who wrote this? A five year old?"
"I've got to get going," I said, gathering up my belongings from the kitchen counter. "Text me if anything comes up." I pecked him on the forehead before starting out of the kitchen.
"Where are you going?"
"Hospital." I said quietly, hoping he didn't hear.
"You're going to see him?" He asked carefully.
I turned to face him, taking a deep breath. "Logan, he's alone right now and scared and in pain, and just because I broke up with him doesn't mean that I can't be there for him as a friend." The doctors and nurses have been calling me the last four days begging me to come back and keep him company while his mom came back from vacation, saying it wasn't good for his recovery if he was alone. I agreed, if I were him, I would want someone there with me too.
He sighed. "I know. I'm not usually the jealous boyfriend type, I'm just overreacting." Every time Jason came up he acted like this, worrying that I would slowly realize I loved him again.
I went over and kissed him hard, feeling his uneasiness through the passion. "You are." I smirked at him.
He smiled weakly, kissing me on the cheek. "Go have fun with Macho Man, but not too much fun."
"Love you." I called over my shoulder as I walked out the door.
As I closed his door, I noticed that mine was open, swallowing a lump in my throat.
Either someone was breaking in, or she was home.
I knew I shouldn't go in, but I had also been wearing the same clothes for a while and could use a change. I'm not sure if it was that or the pure curiosity that led me to go inside.
It was like stepping into an alternate universe. I hadn't been in my own home for so long it felt different, like a close relative you haven't seen in years. Everything had changed, but everything felt the same, and it was still my house.
