"I'm fine, Madisyn, really."
"Are you sure? You cried on the floor yesterday."
Aubrey scoffed. "Seriously, I'm ok. It's just a break up."
"Aubs," I sighed. "I don't want you breaking into sobs during your class. I can call your sub-"
"Madisyn! I'll be ok." She laughed. "I got out my sobs this morning."
I rubbed my head remembering her painful cries at five a.m., the source of waking me up this morning. "Ok. I should probably get to voting before I explode."
"Isn't it obvious who you're going to vote for?" She asked, taking a bite out of a banana.
Obvious? How was it obvious who I was going to choose between my boyfriend and my boss? Yes my boss was sponsoring me, but I also wanted to be a supportive girlfriend, especially because I think Blake would do a good job. I had no idea who I was going to choose, but I had to do it.
I opened my mouth to explain this to her when I heard a knock on the front door.
Aubrey quickly took another bite of her banana. "Sawry ahm eating."
I rolled my eyes and went to get the door, and it was a good thing I did.
"Don't open it all the way," Logan whispered, peeking through the crack to see if Aubrey was in the hall behind me. "I just came to drop off my key."
"I wish Jason did that," I muttered as I took it from him. "thanks."
"You're not mad at me?" He asked, backing up a little like I was going to punch him or something.
I sighed and shook my head. "For what? I mean, she broke up with you."
He breathed a sigh of relief. "Oh thank god. I thought I had lost my job."
"What job?" I laughed. "Your part in the dream team?"
"Yes," He hissed. "I still want to help you guys, but she might be a little harder to work with so as long as you're not mad at me, I still have my job. Being Sweet Pea fulfills me."
I snorted, glancing over my shoulder to see if Aubrey was looking. "Is that all, Sweet Pea?"
He pressed his lips together. "Did she get rid of my stuff? I had a few pairs of clothes here and my superman toothbrush, it's a collectable."
I laughed. "I'll look for them."
"Thanks so much, Madisyn." He breathed, rubbing his forehead. "This hasn't been easy on me."
"It hasn't on her either, she cried on the floor last night."
He smiled. "They always want me back."
I scoffed. "Bye, Sweet Pea."
He smiled at me one last time before I shut the door.
"Who was it?" Aubrey asked.
"Jason finally returned my key." I lied, dangling the key in front of her.
"Why didn't he come in?"
"He has to get to voting and so do I," I dropped the key on the counter and slung my purse over my shoulder. "call me if you need anything." I blew her a kiss and she returned it before I walked out of the apartment.
It seemed to be hotter out as I zipped down the street on my motorcycle, the pressure of the day bearing down on me like a ton of bricks.
I came to a stop light and noticed an ad on park bench with my face on it with the caption "Reelect Mayor Forbes for a brighter future." Directly behind it in a store window, had Blake's laughing face on it as he held the hands of small children, with the caption "Vote Rockwell, help our children grow strong."
