"I say, increased security at the precinct."
"The officers can protect themselves. I say we watch out for vigilantes. Shoot to kill."
"More coffee, please."
I mentally rolled my eyes as I went over to the other side of the table to fill up Mayor Forbes' coffee. I promised myself I was only doing this demeaning job for the information.
"Listen," One of the city council members started. "We need to have better training for our officers. I hate to say it, but Pure Rose-"
"I say we call her Poison Rose," Jason suggested. "For what she's doing to our city."
She rolled her eyes."Fine. Then I hate to say it but Poison Rose was right. Crime has only been rising and our officers aren't seeing it. More cameras in this city, a few more precincts, maybe we can get some of those cool noise things Sonic Boom has."
I glanced over at Jason as he leaned back proudly in his seat, smiling. "They are pretty ingenious."
A thousand opinions flew around the table at once. Some said death to vigilantes, others said we needed more, needless to say, they were getting nowhere in solving the problem.
"Quiet down, everyone." Mayor Forbes commanded. "This is all meaningless chatter. We need to take a vote and all see eye to eye on this."
"Mr. Mayor," Another council member said. "For all we know, one of us could be a vigilante."
I looked over at Jason as he looked over at me. Nothing suspicious at all going on in here.
"I agree. Especially with the allegations Blake Rockwell made against you-"
"You don't seriously believe that," The mayor chuckled as he looked around the room at the serious faces, losing his laughter and replacing it with a stern statement. "It's not true."
"With that said," A councilman started. "I say we should buckle down on security and maybe do a record check on everyone, maybe monitor some people, everyone at city hall at least. I mean, how do these vigilantes get all of their information? They've got to be on the inside." I should've spiked the coffee with vodka. I couldn't have them thinking these things.
"No," Jason shook his head. "Don't you think that if someone here was a vigilante, they would just make themselves even more vulnerable to being discovered?"
"Then what do you suggest we do?"
Jason sat back in his chair, defeated.
The room was silent for a few minutes.
I took this silence as my chance to pounce, almost immediately regretting saying anything. "May I suggest something?" I said quietly from the corner as I filled some more paper cups with coffee.
Everyone turned and looked at me like I just declared I was Voltage.
"Sorry." I murmured with a red face, starting to leave.
"No," Jason said, making me want to slap him. "Tell us."
I turned to face him, a smirk playing on his gorgeous lips that I wish I could suck on right now. God damn, I couldn't be having these scandalous thoughts when I already had a smoking hot boyfriend.
I swallowed. "Vigilantism is slowly killing and healing this city, so I say we take out the ones who are killing it and help the ones who are protecting it." I had to save my ass somehow, and this pitch was my best bet while still targeting Hypothermia. If they went through with it, I would be killing two birds with one stone.
