'Once again I accept the true gods. Those of my father, those of my people.'
-Ubbe Ragnarsson.~
The two shieldmaidens galloped north where they ended up in the dark part of the woods. "She wouldn't have gone far Ingrid if she was injured" Thorunn reassured her.
"I just can't help but wonder what made her run away from the battle. Heahmunds death?"
"Your mother may be the most famous shieldmaiden ever but sometimes she can be afraid of things too you know. We are all afraid of something Ingrid no matter how strong and brave we are."
Ingrid knew her mother well but she never experienced her being afraid of anything, yet that was the image she portrayed to everyone including her own daughter.
Thorunn knew Lagertha was afraid of one thing and that was loosing her children. But something made her run away in battle was it if she had to witness Bjorn or Ingrids death? Thorunn shook her head it was a foolish thing to think, Lagertha wouldn't do such a thing.
Something in the distance caught Thorunns eye, making her flick the reins for her horse to move closer to take a look."What's that?" Ingrid asked as her gaze followed Thorunns towards a wooden hut. The two shieldmaidens got off their horses. Wild flowers grew from ever angle of the wooden hut, as if somehow the place hadn't been maintained in so long. Ingrid had a strange feeling in her stomach.
An old woman came out of the hut, her grey hair stuck out in almost every angle just like the wild flowers did around the wooden hut.
"Have you seen a woman, a viking warrior to be exact?" Ingrid asked.
The old woman didn't say a word but smiled at Ingrid and walked back into the hut. The two women looked at one another before following her inside. The hut wasn't the cleanest, herbs and clay bowls filled the wooden table that was right in the center of the building.
There sat on the floor was a fragile woman, with short grey hair, wearing a yellow dress probably one that used to belong to old woman back in her days of youth. Ingrids eyes widened in horror as she caught the wild gaze of the woman."Mother!!"
Ingrid ran towards the now haggard woman with short grey hair.
"Mother?!"
Lagertha didn't seem like herself. Ingrid placed her hand on her mothers face, there was a fresh new scar there. Lagerthas eyes looked wild and frightened, as if she was some fragile deer caught in trap by hunters. She was fragile right now, Ingrid had never seen her mother this bad.
"Come on let's take her back and get her cleaned up Ingrid."
Thorunn helped Ingrid get Lagertha up off the ground, and guide her out of the hut.
"Wait!" the old woman called out to them. Ingrid turned to face the old woman, who had something in her hand. She opened her hand to reveal her mothers necklace. "Thor" the old woman whispered. She took Ingrids hand, and placed the necklace onto the palm of her hand. Then the old woman moved closer touching the shieldmaidens face, the woman's green eyes gazed into her familiar ones, and then her hand moved down towards her stomach that was now showing.
"He will be a mighty warrior born amongst kings."
Ingrid stared at the woman in amazement but soon was knocked out of her trance by her mothers coughing. She moved over to Lagertha quickly.
"We need to get her back now."
