Pulling the dress that Elle had selected out of a hundred and one styles for Katy to wear over her head, I couldn’t help but laugh as Katy screamed. The dress, no offence to Elle, was disgusting. It would have been a great dress for a funeral - but not a wedding. The theme colours for Elle and JJ’s wedding were black and white, which was rather sophisticated but the dress that Katy had to wear was disgusting. It was decorated with ruffles and lace. It was definitely not practical for a fourteen month old baby who was always toddling around on her feet.

As I pulled the dress down, making sure it fitted her properly, I sighed as I noticed how devastated Katy was at wearing it. I didn’t blame her. It was truly hideous. After a few minutes of debating silently with myself, I made up my mind and began to take the dress back off my daughter.

Just as I finished putting the dress I had originally bought for Katy to wear at the wedding on her, my phone began to ring.

“Hello,” I answered, without even looking at the caller ID as I struggled to get Katy’s slightly curly hair into two cute bunches - one either side of her head.

“Sammy. It’s me - Elle.”

I looked across at the dress that I had flung off Katy that was now lying in a crumpled mess beside the window. “I just wanted to know if the dress fits Katy okay?”

Perfect. “I’m afraid it doesn’t. It looked so nice and it’s such a shame that it doesn’t fit properly. I guess Katy just grew more than we suspected since she had the measurements taken.”

“Ah,” Elle sighed. “Don’t worry about it then. Is there any other dresses she could wear that is of a black and white colour scheme?”

Phew. She’d bought my little fib. “I’m sure I’ve got something she can wear. Don’t worry about her though. You’re gonna be the focus of today so just worry about getting you all ready,” I smiled. “Are you feeling excited yet?”

“I can’t wait,” Elle replied - her voice full of glee.

“Well, I’d better find something else for Katy to wear. I’ll see you later when you’re Mrs. Hamblett.”

Elle beamed again in joy before hanging up. Putting my phone back down on the bed, I looked down at Katy, who was laying on the bed with her eyes wide open, staring at me. I picked her up and cradled her in my arms. “See, you look much better,” I smiled.

“Daddy!” she beamed.

“You’ll see daddy later on,” I replied, putting her down on the floor so I could get myself ready. “Daddy’s with Uncle JJ at the moment.”

“Uncle JJ!”

“Uncle JJ is getting married today, isn’t he?” I smiled as I rummaged through my wardrobe, trying to find something practical for me to wear. I had been too focused on finding something for Katy to wear in case the dress Elle had chosen was a total disaster that I had forgotten to find something new for me to wear.

After I eventually decided on a simple black dress with a white belt - my lucky little black number, I got dressed and ran the straighteners through my hair. Once I had finished my hair, clipping it up at the front with a black and white bow I managed to find in one of the drawers in the dresser, I sat down on the bed and began to do my make-up. It wasn’t before long before Katy clawed at the bed covers, trying to get up. Reluctantly, I put the make-up brush down and lifted her onto the bed. She sat on the bed in front of me, watching in amazement as I continued to do my make-up.

“Me!” she grinned.

I shook my head. “You’re too beautiful to need make-up, Katy.”

“ME!”
