Sat in the hospital waiting room, I placed my hand on my bump, slowly rubbing it as I waited patiently for my name to be called. All I could think about was my baby as I watched the clock on the opposite wall to me ticking away.
“Sammy Jones?” the receptionist smiled to me as I was lost in my own trail of thought about the baby.
I nodded and stood up, grabbing my jacket from the seat next to where I was sat. Anxiously, I made my way into the consultation room to be met by my midwife, Jackie.
“Hello Sammy,” Jackie smiled to me, gesturing for me to sit down at her desk. “How are you feeling today?”
I was not in the mood for small talk at all today. “I just wanna know what’s going on with my baby.”
“We’re still unsure about what is going on but we’re gonna run some tests to make sure it’s all okay,” Jackie smiled.
“I just wanna know they’re okay,” I said, forcing myself to smile a half-hearted smile. “Especially after what happened last month with the other one.”
“I’m sure they’re fine,” Jackie smiled, trying to reassure me. “Do you want anybody here with you?”
I shrugged my shoulders. “It depends whether it’s bad news or not.”
Jackie tapped away at the computer, completely ignoring what I had just said. I sunk back into the chair with my hand still on my bump. The entire office was silent apart from the sound of the clock on the wall ticking away to itself and Jackie’s fingers flying across the computer’s keyboard.
“When was the last time you felt any movement?” she asked, not taking her eyes off of the computer screen as she spoke to me.
“Probably last night. It could have been late afternoon. I had an early night so I wasn’t really aware of movement during the night.”
Jackie scratched her head, looking at the screen with confusion as I sat nervously, waiting for her to say something.
“Sammy, I’m just gonna go book you in for an ultrasound so if you can just hang around the maternity ward and I’ll come find you,” Jackie said, standing up from the computer and walking towards the door.
As Jackie left the room, I stood up and followed her out. The waiting room was completely empty. I stood in the middle of it, watching the television that was playing away to itself in the corner of the room but not paying any attention to it. After a few moments, I walked out of the room and into the corridor. Walking past all the wards as I made my way down the corridor, I kept my hand on my bump, gently stroking it as I thought about all the things that could go wrong. Reaching the end of the corridor, I saw a pay phone at one side and then the window into the baby ward at the other. Peering in through the window, I looked at all the babies as they slept peacefully in their incubators. Parents bursting with glee were stood beside me, watching their children sleep.
“Hello,” one woman smiled to me as she noticed me looking through the window. “Which one is yours?”
“Oh, I haven’t had mine yet,” I smiled, patting my bump.
“How far along as you?” she asked.
“Thirty weeks.”
“Still a bit to go then,” she laughed. “Wait, you’re that singer.”
I smiled as I nodded. “Sorry, I’ve got to go.”
Making my way back down the corridor, I stopped myself half way. Turning around, I walked back down to the end of the corridor and past the woman as she watched me. Digging around in my jacket pocket, I found a coin and put it in the pay phone. Dialling a number, I placed the phone to my ear and waited for somebody to answer it on the other end of the phone line. The woman from before was still looking at me with a smile on her face.
