Carrying a glass of pinâ colada out from the patio doors and into the pool area of the villa, I looked through the sunglasses that were perched on my nose and smiled up at the sunshine that was shining down on my skin. I placed the glass on the table beside the sun lounger before folding up the towel that was sprawled across the floor from when George took Katy for a bit of a swim this morning. As I settled down on the sun lounger and began to relax, sipping occasionally at the cocktail, I heard the sound of little footsteps rushing across the decking. Looking across, I saw Katy beaming at me as she trudged in my direction.
“Careful,” I smiled to her as she continued to patter across the floor towards me - her arms wide open as she got closer.
I picked her up and placed her on the sun lounger in between my legs. She put her tiny hands on the top of my thighs and lent back so she was resting against my stomach. I couldn’t help but laugh as she put her Minnie Mouse sunglasses on her head once I put my sunglasses on the top of my head - well, George’s Ray Bans but I had claimed them as my own since what was his was mine too now.
“Mummy,” she beamed as she prodded the glass of pinâ colada that was resting in my hand.
“You can’t have this,” I laughed, putting it back on the table.
She looked devastated. Instead of relaxing back onto the sun lounger, I picked her up and carried her back into the house. As soon as we got in the kitchen, I put her on the kitchen counter beside the fridge and opened up the huge American style fridge that was stocked up with all sorts of drinks. Katy watched me carefully as I grabbed her cup from the side and unscrewed the lid. After pouring in a mixture of orange juice, pineapple juice and mango juice, I put the lid back on it and gave it a shake, pretending I was some sort of professional cocktail maker in one of the top cocktail bars in Mayfair.
“There. Katy Colada,” I joked as I handed the cocktail in her cup to her. Katy beamed as she sipped on the cocktail. “Now you can drink your cocktail whilst I drink mine.”
I wrapped my arm around her and picked her up, placing her back down on the floor and taking hold of her hand as she held onto the cup with her other hand, sipping on it as we walked back out into the Floridan sunshine.
Settling back down on our sun lounger, Katy resumed back to her position on my stomach as I took a drink from my cocktail. There we were, sat in the sunshine with our sunglasses on the top of our heads, pushing our hair back, sipping on our cocktails and getting a suntan at the same time. It was easy to see why George grinned when he came out to join us by the pool.
“Look at you two,” he gushed as he took a photo of us on his phone. “Like mother like daughter.”
“Did we invite you out here?” I joked.
“Daddy, go!” Katy instructed, pointing to the door in a sassy manner - probably something she had picked up from Uncle Jaymi.
“Shall I go?” George asked me.
“Listen to the boss,” I grinned.
George rolled his eyes as he walked back into the villa, leaving Katy and I to chill outside by ourselves, just like Katy demanded.
Katy grinned up at the sunshine that was burning high in the sky before turning back to look at me with the same adorable grin on her face. “Mummy,” she smiled.
“What’s up?” I asked.
“Love you,” she stuttered.
I was amazed. Katy usually said “lo you” - never “love you”. I kissed the top of her head as she rested back on my stomach. Placing my cocktail back down on the table beside me, I held onto my little girl and smiled to myself. “And I love you. More than you’ll ever know. You’re my special little monkey.”
