Chapter Four

Caleb had closed the bathroom door and turned on the shower before he could let himself cry. His tears mingled with the water coming from the shower and just his sobs were a sign that he was hurt. He looked at himself in the mirror and saw how swollen and red his eyes were, he felt humiliated as he dried up his body and put on the oversized T-shirt and the briefs he used as pijamas. He didn't even bothered in turning the lights on, he went directly to bed, cuddled a pillow and cried to sleep.

Antoine's rage had vanished by the time he arrived home. He had been thinking about everything that happened back at the hospital and couldn't felt worst about it. He didn't know where that man that threatened Caleb came from; he had never said those awful words in his life. He replayed the scene in his head a million times and thought in all the ways he could have reacted differently. He felt attacked with Caleb's joke, but why?, it's not that he's in love with Caleb, right?

"Of course not!" Antoine exclaimed to himself, he rested his head in the steering wheel making his car honk loudly.

Antoine couldn't fall asleep that night, guilt was consuming him. He perfectly knew that he needed to apologize, Caleb had been nothing but nice to him and the way he acted was beyond unacceptable. What startled Antoine the most was that he didn't know why he felt so miserable, he did something terrible, yeah, but was it because he did it to someone he was interested in? No, no, no, right?

He set out to the hospital early in the morning, he felt all eyes on him as soon as he walked in. It's been a day since the incident had happened, it was too soon for people to forget. He arrived to the counter in reception to be attended by the same nurse he had asked about Caleb the other day, her welcoming smiled suddenly erased as she saw it was him who was facing her. Antoine smiled but she didn't smiled back, she looked at him with disgust; she made clear she wasn't happy to see him.

"Can I help you" she snapped rather than asking.

"I-is maybe... Caleb here?" Antoine stuttered, he felt judged just by asking that question.

"Yes, he is" she replied dully. "He's not feeling very well, I wonder why."

Antoine closed his eyes. "Could I talk to him?"

"Do you have an appointment?" She asked.

"No, if I just could talk to him for..."

"Then I cannot help you" she cut him off in mid-sentence. "Next one in line please!"

Antoine went back to the waiting area feeling defeated. He fixed his eyes on Caleb's office door, he wasn't going to go home if he didn't say something to him, his conscience would never let him alone. He had been sitting for an hour when Caleb left his office to go to the bathroom, Antoine jumped from his seat and run towards him; the nurse from reception behind him.

"Caleb! Hey!" Antoine exclaimed, Caleb turned his head to see who was calling him.

"Excuse me sir, you can not be here without an appointment!" The nurse exclaimed, feeling breathless.

"It's okay, Barbara" Caleb said and crossed his arms. "What do you want."

"Could I just have a word with you?" Antoine asked, feeling he was imploring. Caleb and him went back to his office. They sat down in front of each other, Caleb crossed his arms and Antoine clinched his hands tightly.

"Caleb, I just wanted to apologize for my yesterday's behavior" Antoine said. "It was completely unacceptable and I feel deeply sorry about it."

"If this is a PR move, you can save it. I'm not going to sue you or make this public because I don't want to feel more humiliated than I felt yesterday" Caleb replied. "You can go home now."
