All the while she became more open and friendly, and started looking at me with something like respect.
It wasn't until she began talking about a vampire coven called the Cullens that I got confused. Everything she'd told me added up, to a point, until she told me about these yellow-eyed vampires who lived off the blood of animals and befriended werewolves.
"There are werewolves, too? I should've known." I said, pursing my lips. But I frowned. "Aren't vampires and werewolves supposed to be, like, mortal enemies?"
Jane chuckled, and said, "Yes. These werewolves seem to be different from the Children of the Moon, though. Shapeshifters who hunt vampires instead of wild beasts who turn on the full moon."
"Huh," I said thoughtfully, "So are there more vampires who drink animal blood?"
"Yes," She said, "One called the Denali coven. They're more like families than covens. Most of our kind travel in pairs or alone. Sometimes three or four. These...families," She said the word with distaste, "Live in permanent residences and love each other dearly."
I frowned, "But what about the Volturi?" I asked, "You guys stay here, and it seems like you get along."
"We're different. We're like royalty, and our...food is brought in from outside the city. Heidi, your brother's new mate, does this task for us."
"Mate?" I asked seriously. You gotta be kidding me.
She laughed, "Wife, if you will. Since vampires do not often wed, we simply call our companions mates."
I mouthed a silent "oh", and sighed. "How do I deal with Alec? He hates me, and I don't even know why."
"He doesn't hate you. He's just frustrated." Jane looked contemplative again, "I wonder..."
My head snapped up, "What?"
"I could convince Aro to force him to spend time with you. Surely he would get to know you as I have. Aro usually listens to me..." Jane trailed, marvelling at her idea. I didn't think it was such a bad idea myself. As terrified as I was of him, I was much more curious.
"Not bad," I said. Jane smiled.
"Tomorrow you will have the day with Alec, one way or another." Jane said firmly. I smiled to myself, for no apparent reason. Maybe I could finally figure something out about him.
"Jane?" I asked after a few minutes of silence. She looked at me.
"I guess I'm gonna have to be a vampire, won't I?"
She nodded reluctantly, "You'll like it, though."
I got an idea then. "Can I have a party?!"
She laughed, "Nobody's ever thrown a party for becoming a vampire."
"Pleeeeaaaaseee?!" I exclaimed, "With a cherry on top? It would be so awesome!"
"You'll have to ask Aro. I think some of the guard might protest though, including my brother."
"Let's go ask him!" I said excitedly, tugging on her hand. She laughed.
"You are a strange human." She said, but she went with me anyway.
I dragged her down the stairway and to the double doors. I was shaking with excitement.
We strolled into the room confidently, and the three men were on their thrones conversing quietly. When we approached them, Aro smiled.
"I see you've met Jane." Aro said to me. I nodded quickly, wanting to get straight to the point.
"I want to be a vampire." I announced. Aro's smile broadened, and Caius silently scowled. "And I want a party after." I finished.
Aro laughed, "Whatever for, child?"
I shrugged, "Why not?"
Aro thought about this, then looked at his brothers. "Marcus, Caius?"
"Not in a million years." Caius muttered. Marcus said nothing, just shrugged.
Aro looked disapprovingly at them, "Brothers, it could liven the place up. When was the last time you had fun?"
"You're actually considering the insolent girl's suggestion?" Caius looked surprised. I was too excited to be offended. Please say yes, please say yes...
"Well, I for one, think it's a marvelous idea. We shall have a ball! After Reagan here and her brother are turned!" Aro said, putting his hands together. I jumped for joy inside.
"Thank you!" I yelled, spinning in a circle. I loved dancing, and I loved parties. So, naturally, I always wanted to go to a ball.
Jane smiled softly at my excitement.
I hadn't noticed he was there until Alec spoke. "You have got to be kidding me."
