Arf! Arf!

The little black ball of fur tackled me, licking my face with joy. I giggled, petting the black labrador puppy to settle him.

"He's all yours," Russell said, laughing, "I'm warning you, he loves licking people."

I scratched the puppy behind his ears, smiling up at Russell. "What's his name?"

Russell shrugged. "Dunno. I found him locked in a dirty cage by an apartment complex last night. He didn't have a collar, and he was in the back alley. I couldn't leave him there."

I wanted to cry. Who would do that to a poor, defenseless puppy?

"Awww," I held the puppy close. Poor thing. "I'm gonna call you...umm...Spencer! That was my dad's name." I told the puppy. He yipped.

"I still have to buy the essentials. You know, a bed, a collar, a leash, a bowl..." Spencer shoved his hands in his back pockets awkwardly. I knew he wasn't a big fan of fluffy things, bt he wasn't heartless. Anybody would've rescued a cute puppy from a cage in a back alley.

I put Spencer down and hugged Russell. "Thanks Russ! I love him!"

Russell chuckled. "I got enough food for tonight. It's already up in your room...I'm gonna get his stuff, bt I have to check in with Heidi first."

I was incredulous. "Didn't you just see her?"

"It's a mate thing." He said, "We can barely stand to be away from each other. I bet she'll want to come with me."

I rolled my eyes. I would never let myself get whipped like that.

"Come on, Spencer!" I said animatedly, "I'll show you your new home!"

Spencer followed me or of the bedroom after Spencer waved me bye. He was a very exciteable dog. He yipped and jumped all the way to my room, although I had to carry him up the steps. I put him down when we got to the door and opened it.

Spencer flew into the room like a torpedo. He explored everything. He scratched the couch, nipped at my already beat up shoes, and returned to me everytime, as if asking my permission. Russell had been right. He loved licking people.

"Are you hungry?" I asked him when he started biting a pillow. He jumped off the couch and pawed at my legs, looking up at me with dark gray eyes.

I laughed and got the small bag of dog food off my bed. I looked around for a bowl or a plate...anything. This was so like Russell. Get the food, and forget a bowl. I sighed, searching the room for something. I ended up eating my lunch--which was a sandwhich--before I fed him, using the plate to put his food on. I put it on the floor by my bed, and closed the dog food, putting that up on the dresser so Spencer couldn't get it.

I unwrapped a slightly melted Dreamsicle and licked at it while Spencer munched on his food. I was so happy Russell saved him and gave him to me. Just the thought of Spencer scared, shivering in a too-small cage...

When Spencer was done, he clawed at the bed, giving me those cute puppy eyes. He wasn't big enough to get on the bed. I smiled and helped him up. He snggled up into my lap and I rubbed his floppy ears contentedly.

"I miss Jane already." I confided in Spencer. He looked at me, as if he cokld actually understand what I was saying. "I wish she could meet you. She wouldn't be able to resist you, would she boy? Would she?" I cooed. I was such a sucker for cute animals. Actually, for anything cute.
