"Good morning sunshine!"
Sunlight cascaded across me and I groaned, hiding my face under the pillow. Wait a minute...
I bolted upright. "Russell!" I squealed, tripping out of bed and bounding into him. I wrapped my arms around him, hardly noticing that he felt like a wall of concrete.
That was where everyone was last night. Making sure Russell didn't cause chaos, like he usually did.
"Hi, Reg." He murmured, ruffling my hair. I looked up at him. His blond hair was shinier, his angular face bolder, and his shimmering green eyes were now a brilliant ruby. His skin glittered like a million facets in the sun as he stood next to the window wall.
"What's it like? Are you thirsty or hungry?" I asked suddenly, backing away a little in case he was either, "Can you eat normal food even? Do the red eyes mess up your vision? How fast are you? Where's Heidi? Is she really like, your soulmate?!" I kept blurting questions, not giving him time to answer.
"Woah, slow down, chief." He smiled, exposing bright white teeth. "Yes, Heidi is my mate."
"How do you know?" I asked quickly.
He paused, "I don't know. There isn't really a reason, I just...know." He shrugged.
"So have you been hunting yet?" I asked.
He nodded tentatively, "I wanted to see you as soon as I woke up, but Heidi said I had to hunt first. I went while you were asleep. You know, I don't really sleep now. It's weird, I feel like the energizer bunny. I just keep going and going."
It didn't scare me that my brother had human blood for dinner. It scared me that he had to hunt before he could see me. He wouldn't hurt me, would he?
"Do you get hungry? Can you eat human food?" I spurted out more questions.
"No. I mean, Heidi said I shouldn't eat human food unless I have a good reason. When I want blood, though, it's like my throat is burning. Like I'm super dehydrated or something. Heidi said it gets better after a couple years as a newborn."
"Newborn? What like, a kid?" I asked.
"That's just what they call new vampires. We don't have a lot of control in the beginning, you know." He explained, "But I don't wanna talk about vampire stuff, I want to talk about you. What's been going on with you for the past three days? Or however long I've been out..."
"Out?" I questioned.
He bit his lip, "Nevermind. Seriously, what's up with you?"
Still trying to get used to this new and seemingly improved Russell, I sat on the couch with him opposite me and tried to explain everything. I left out bits and pieces like when I went to Alec's fountain room and the dream and the weird phrase he kept refrencing--'play your cards right'. But I did tell him about Jane, and my day with Alec, and the incident where I read his mind. Also, about bloodsingers and the cute boy named Jeremy.
When I was finished, Russell looked like he wanted to ask me a lot of questons, but he wasn't sure where to start. Didn't blame him. It'd been a long three days.
"Heidi told me about the gifts. She also told me about bloodsingers. "La tua cantante" she called it. She said that when we first came here she loved the smell of my blood, but I wasn't human long enough for her to know if I was her bloodsinger." Russell explained. He looked very contemplative about something. I knew him well enough to know he was keeping a lot from me.
