There was chaos.

Alec ordered me not to let go of his hand and catapulted me into the throne room, where I knew Conner was, along with several other unfamiliar minds. Despite the fact that I knew he wouldn't hear, I reached out to Conner with a desperation my newborn self was unfamiliar with.

Conner? Conner! Please be okay...I kept praying, silently, screaming louder and louder in my mind.

It was too quiet.

In my mind, at least. In the physical world, people were screaming--rough, animalistic voices howled in agony--and the sound of ripping flesh and pounding hearts that suddenly stopped filled the air.

"Reagan." Alec's solemn voice pulled me out of my mind, and I saw his deep crimson eyes full of an emotion I'd never seen on his face...ever. There was an endless empathy etched in his stone features, and for a moment, it bewildered me.

He pointed, a simple gesture, to the other side of the long, bright room, through the cloudy smoke of the mostly extinguished fire. That alone brought on the first wave of relief that would come that night; the castle was saved.

But what he was pointing at made my heart swell with an amount of warmth that I didn't know I could feel--it was impossible that I was this happy in such a dire situation. But I was. I was so happy. Nothing had ever made me happier.

Images of my childhood flashed across my vision and I smiled, staring at the sketchy blond boy leaning against one of the white, too beautiful columns. He had a dirty, bloody face, and a serious demeanor that I'd never seen from him, but suddenly Conner was the same ten-year-old boy that was such a big part of my life. Like a second brother, but less strict.

A pretty, lean girl was crouched next to him, telling him something. He was listening intently, staring at her like she was his gravity. There was something so familiar about her...like I'd seen her in a dream.

"Conner!" I called out to him with both my mind and voice. His head snapped up, and in the next second I was on the other side of the room, wrapping my arms around him.

"Reg!" He exclaimed shortly, taking in a deep breath that I'd probably just knocked out of him.

"I'm so glad--you're...alive!" I hesitated, so overwhelmed with emotion that I actully twirled like a freaking ballerina and giggled. "You're okay!" I shouted, a little too loud, and crushed him to me again.

"Reagan...can't...breathe..." He managed, trying pathetically to detach my from his warm body. He laughed, a deep, powerful, familiar sound that rumbled through his chest and resonated in my ears like music.

"I missed you!" I screamed above the growls and hideous noises. "I forgive you! I don't care if you kill people, it doesn't matter!"

"Woah!" Conner interupted, making me falter. "You think I kill people?"

I frowned, thoroughly confused. The brunette crouched next to him chose that moment to intercede, looking at me with creamy white-blue eyes.

"Who is this, Conner?" The girl asked him, looking directly at me, but not focused, like she was seeing something that we weren't.

"Salem, this is Reagan." Conner introduced, "Reagan, Salem. She's my...well, girlfriend, I guess you could say."

That was it! That was where I knew her from! The vision I'd had before I woke up as a vampire. She was there, laughing next to Conner.
