Why Not?

"You gotta be kidding me!" I said, very obnoxiously might I add.

I've lived alone with my brother Russell in an apartment for two years. Recently he decided to drop college and take a vacation. Recently meaning ten seconds ago. He didn't care that the grumpy owner of this dump would never let us back in, he didn't care that he'd dropped out of Harvard Law School, and he didn't care that his soccer scholarship would fall to pieces. That was what I liked most about him.

He was crazy.

Of course his idea to go to Italy might've had something to do with his girlfriend, Heidi. They'd been dating online for three months now. Talk about long distance relationships. I had a weird feeling about her, though. Something just wasn't right.

It might've been concern for my brother's sanity, though.

"You need this stuff called money to travel to a different continent," I reminded my brother, "And we don't have any of that."

"We have the money dad left us, Reg." Russell grumbled, throwing our clothes into a duffel bag.

"Uh, three grand," I said skeptically, "Is not going to get us to Italy."

"Yes, it will." He told me, looking at me for the first time. He seemed very distracted. Not unusual. Combined with his ADHD and craziness, sometimes it was a bit chaotic around here. "I'll use some of the drug money if I have to." He said, calm as ever. He stood up straight now, looking me in the face. He didn't look anything like me. He had a pale, angular face with cat-like green eyes and tousled blond hair.

"We can't just drop everything and go!" I exclaimed. I was not going down without a fight.

"Why not?"

 ~*~

"This is crazy." I said for the millionth time.

"Hi, you've reached Russell, please leave a message...or not." Russell mumbled, heading for security. I rolled my eyes.

"Very funny. I can't believe I let you convince me to go to aa foreign country just so you could see your girlfriend." I said, crossing my arms and scowling.

"Let me?" He asked incredulously, "I'm eighteen. I'm your guardian. You have to come with me Reg."

It was true. I was only fifteen.

"Whatever." I said, "If I wanted to, I could run screaming outta this place and ditch you. In fact, I don't even know why I haven't tried that yet! Here I am, going through airport security with you--"

"You want Subway?" He asked me, like I hadn't said anything.

"Yes, please." I said politely, grinning like an idiot.

We finished in security and I didn't threaten to run away again. But it was only because he bribed me with the amazingly fresh yumminess of the wonder that is called Subway. I would pick that over a fancy resturaunt any day.

We sat in the small airport Subway, munching quietly while we waited for our 4:15 PM flight. I saw a couple with a kid over in the corner and silently wondered what it would be like to have a real family.

"Hey, Russ?" I asked, "Are you gonna stay with this chick? Cause I don't wanna be stuck in Italy broke. That would suck really bad. I hope you thought this over because it's the craziest thing you've ever done. Even worse than that one time skateboarding with Eric--"

"Reagan, I don't know. Just eat your food."

I shut up when he said my real name.

The flight eventually came. I could go into the gory details, but you don't wanna know. It was the longest, most aggravating time I've ever had to spend in one place. And it was really hard to sleep because it was uncomfortable and also my brother snores really loud.

When we landed in Italy, I silently prayed my brother spoke Italian, because if he left me in charge of communication, we were screwed.

"This way," My brother said, stretching and yawning. I didn't sleep a wink. I was willing to bet there were circles under my already dull brown eyes.

We picked up our luggage, which consisted of two duffels, and got out of there asap. I was pretty much done with airplanes and airports for the rest of my life. Twelve hours on a plane will do that to you.

"So where does this girlfriend of yours live?" I asked him curiously.

~*~

I squeaked. There was no way. This wasn't a house; it was a castle. We were in Volterra, Italy and never had I seen such a sunny, magnificent city in my entire existence.

"Russell!" A melodic voice sing-songed from the other end of the hall. The tall, beautiful woman strode towards us and embraced Russell. He looked a little flabbergasted.

The woman had long mahogany colored hair and brilliant violet eyes. Her skin was smooth and soft and she was dressed to accent her curves.

"Uh...hi. Nice to meet you in person, Heidi." Russell smiled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "This is my sister, Reagan."

Heidi smiled, "You'll see him soon, Reagan." She said to me kindly.

Whaaa...?

It happened fast. She swept my brother away soundlessly and something hit my head. Hard.

Oh, for the love of Subway.
