Kakashi stared.

He stared at the lifeless body that lay before him.

One that used to be filled with a soul that could be described as life itself.

A soul so kind that none would ever in a million years think to be deserving of a fate like this.

And of all the people who could have died, it was her.

The most angelic, faultless and innocent soul was rid of in that very moment.

Where was the fairness in that?

Where was the logic in that?

Hell, he deserved to die way more so than Rin did.

And yet, fate had managed to do this to him once again.

People whom he had begun to love would be taken from him one by one until he would be all alone, suffering a life of immortality where no matter how strong he sought to be, he could never save the ones who mattered most to him.

If he had any will or energy left, he would have broken into a fit of hysterical laughter.

It was then that he heard the low rumbles of the sky mourning for the angel's death.

He turned up to face the sky that was now covered in dark hues, unflinching as he watched the first few drops of rain fall from the sky.

And just like that, his heart cried for the girl whom he knew loved him unconditionally that he chose not to acknowledge because ignorance was bliss.

But was it really?

His gaze went back to the now gravely pale body on the ground, lingering there for a couple of moments before he hung his head even lower, unable to bear the shame and guilt that ate him inside out.

Before long, he felt figures linger silently around him, awaiting a command from the squad's leader.

"Assist team has arrived. Two dispatches are on the way. How many casualties?"

The pack leader stepped forth, his gaze sweeping the bleak scene.

Kakashi stood still for a couple more moments that seemed to stretch on forever before he finally tore his gaze from the ground to face the male.

"Casualties amount to ... one girl. Rin Nohara. I just need a few hands on deck to bring her body back to Konoha. You can send a message. The remaining teams are not needed anymore."

The male nodded his head and disappeared in a flash to begin instructing his crew.

Kakashi knelt down beside the lifeless Rin, his lips quivering underneath his facade of a mask as he reached out his gloved fingers to sweep the stray brown strands of loose hair neatly to the sides of her pale face.

He hesitated.

No matter how much strength he summoned to carry out the act, he seemed to be unable to muster sufficient energy for a simple action as such.

He couldn't bring himself to do so though he knew Rin would have wanted to at least look presentable when she left.

He was undeserving.

He had no right.

He was a friend killer.

He had killed the one person who loved him so dearly.

He was a Monster.

He deserved no less than to suffer a lifelong punishment of guilt that twisted and tore his guts dry.
