Matty's POV
I think the hardest thing about all of this is lying to Melissa. I don't want to lie to my girlfriend. Hell, I don't ever want to lie to anyone. But, if I want to continue fucking around with Candace until she leaves, then I have to.
"I think you should take some time off and just come up to Vancouver. Your parents miss you." Melissa tells me.
"Then who would train Evan?" I ask, rolling my eyes at the thought.
"I don't know. It wouldn't be for long. Only for the weekend." She fires back.
"Aren't you the one who told me that work comes first and that we can't just take weekend getaways whenever we want to? Because we were supposed to be in New York right now." I remind her. I'm still pissed off over the fact that I wasted that money on the air fare, but I don't really fucking care anymore. It's a waste.
"Okay, but that's different. That's on the other side of the United States. Vancouver isn't very far from Seattle." She reminds me. She has a point, but I do too.
"Yeah, well I don't think I'm going to be able to make it. Not yet, anyways." I tell her.
"I want to see you for Christmas." She tells me.
"Okay. And what are you going to do to make that happen?" I ask her.
"I don't know. You could always come here. I mean, your family is here." She tells me.
"And yours is here in Seattle." I counter.
"Okay, but when was the last time I went to their house for Christmas? What if we all just came here?"
"I don't know about that. My parents aren't really on the best terms right now. I feel like Christmas at their house would be a disaster." I groan.
"They seem alright while I've been here." She informs me.
"And how would you know?" I ask, praying she isn't taking this where I think she is.
"I've been staying with them." She states casually.
"Wait...you're staying with them?" I ask.
"Yes."
"Okay, didn't the company pay for your hotel stay?" I ask, knowing damn well that it did because I'm the one that had to give her the thumbs up.
"Yeah, but why waste the companies money when I could just use their spare room?" She questions.
"Because it's kind of weird that you are staying with my parents and didn't even really inform me? I mean, don't you think that's kind of weird?" I say, trying to stay calm.
"No?" She asks, confused as to why I would even think that this might be kind of out of the ordinary.
"Okay. Let's just change the subject." I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. "What are you doing right now?" I ask, just wanting a normal conversation with my girlfriend.
"I'm scrolling through some emails right now. " She tells me, not even really paying attention.
"Don't you think you should take a break on that?" I ask. She's always working. She is never doing anything else.
"And do what?"
"I don't know...go shopping. Go out to eat. Literally go and do anything other than work for one day. You need it. You work way too much." I tell her.
"Hey, let me call you back real quick." She mumbles and hangs up the phone quickly.
I know that she was more interested in the email she was reading than talking to me. That's always how it goes. There is never any variety with her. I always just assume what she's doing, and I'm usually right about it. She always does the same thing. It drives me fucking mad.
I know I shouldn't be doing this, but as I go to look for Candace's number, all of those bad feelings go away. Candace will probably be doing something more exciting than scrolling through fucking emails. I wonder if this is what she thought of every time I told her I was busy with work even after normal work hours.
I hope not.
I grow more and more anxious with every ring of the phone. She's probably busy. I mean, she isn't here on vacation. She's here to work, not to feed into my sexual desires.
I mean, I wish that was why she was here. Kind of.
I don't even want to just fuck her. I really just want to see her. I want to hangout and joke and laugh with her. I just don't want to be lonely right now.
"Matty, hey!" She says when she answers the phone. My smile grows, and I have to practically shake it off of my face.
"Hey, Candace. What are you up to right now?" I ask, picking at the skin around my nails. This is a nervous habit I want nothing more than to break.
"Literally not a single thing. I'm bored." She laughs. Well, this lines up perfectly.
"I see. Well, I was just calling to see if maybe you wanted to come over for a bit? We could have a drink and watch a movie or something." I say quickly.
"A drink and a movie? That's it?" She asks with a knowing voice. I smirk and shake my head. Damn, she's great. She's fucking great.
"I mean...whatever else arises..." I say with a shrug, knowing she can't see it.
"Hmm...I don't know." She says, trying to convince me that her answer isn't already a yes.
"I haven't eaten dinner yet. I could run to the store and grab some steaks?" I offer.
"You don't eat steak." She giggles.
"Yeah, but you do." I reply.
"Hmm...how about you make me the best vegan meal you can conjure up and we have a deal." She bribes me.
Fuck, she's great.
"Sounds like a plan. I'll start dinner now if you want to head on over?"
"Sounds good." She replies.
"Awesome. Do you remember how to get here? Or do you need me to drop a pin?" I ask her, already sending her a pin.
"Send me your location. I'll be there soon. Bye, Matty." She says softly.
"Bye, Candace." I say with a smile.
When she hands up, I rush to the bathroom and take the fastest shower of my entire life. She makes me nervous all over again. It's kind of sad to think about at times. She used to be the one person who knew me better than anyone else.
