Hayden’s POV

I stood outside Peters front door for a couple minutes hoping he would walk back out and say he was sorry, but he never did. I sighed and went around the block. It was starting to get cool out. When I looked at my phone it said it was 3:47 and I couldn’t believe it was already that late. I went to the park and sat underneath the tree I did last time I came. From here I could see the kids running around the park and I watched in envy at the mothers who were smiling at their children. I pray that these mothers don’t turn out like mine did. A liar and a cheater and someone who hits their own kid. I texted Ronnie and asked her to come and get me, she said she would be here soon so I sat and waited. The trees were blowing in the wind and the grass was too long but it made me feel at home. Peaceful. Maybe Ronnie would let me go home to check on my dad first. She pulled up and I sighed in relief, getting up and going to her car she got out and hugged me.

“Boys are stupid.” I chuckled and she slapped my butt. “Get in the car.” I did I was told and we drove around for a couple hours not talking and just watching. Listening.

“Ronnie?”

“Yeah?”

“Thanks.”

“Of course, you know if you need me to pick you up I would.”

“That’s not why I’m saying thanks.” She pulled back into the park parking lot and turned the car off, turning to face me. She sat criss cross and I stayed where I was.

“Thanks for being friends with me.” She smiled and my phone rang. Peter. I ignored it right away. I looked back at my best friend. “I had a best friend, her name was Danielle, which is creepy because that’s Peter’s half-sisters name. We were best friends, closer than ever. But she was controlling. We always had to do whatever she wanted, she expected me to follow her. We were still friends, but a month or so before I left to come here, she stopped being my best friend and I stopped being hers.” I remember the text she sent me while I was in the car. It meant nothing to me. “You’re my best friend Ronnie, and I hope we’re always best friends.” She smiled again.

“We will be. You’re the bestest friend ever.” I laughed. My phone rang. I declined Peter again. Right after one another, 3 times in a row he called. Then it went silent and I waited, it didn’t ring again. The shrill of a phone ringing made me groan but it wasn’t mine. Ronnie held her phone up and looked. “It’s him.” She said.

“Don’t answer Ronnie.” She did as I asked. Mine rang again.

“Maybe you should just see what he wants.” I nodded and pressed talk.

“Hayden?! Where are you?” Peter snapped through the phone.

“With Ronnie.”

“Shocker. I should’ve guessed. You know when I call I expect you to answer.” I was blown away.

“You expect me to? Who the fuck do you think you are?”

“Why are you yelling at me? Where are you Hayden?”

“Away from you, that’s where I am.” I looked up at Ronnie and she shrugged. He was already so controlling.

“That’s a bit harsh don’t you think?”

“So is slamming the door in my face Peter.” He sighed.

“I didn’t slam it.”

“What do you want?” I snapped. I’m so tired and I just want to sleep and go home.
