Maya's pov
Today seemed like a normal day for the group, but for me, I didn't like it. Normal was a foreign word. It didn't even sound right with the life we were in. Normal was waking up and getting ready for school. Normal was taking a walk down the sidewalk and laughing. Normal wasn't killing walkers and seeing the people you care about get taken down one by one. I knew this. The group didn't. I watched every moment in the prison seeing Beth and Lori walk in with crutches. I saw the way Carl smiled to Beth and smiled herself.
" Why don't you talk to her instead of giving googly eyes ?" I asked innocently.
Carl turned to me with red to his cheeks while he stuttered at his words." What ?" He asked clueless making me arch my brow knowing he knew damn well what I was saying.
" Nothing Grimes. Just stick to the hat thing." I said standing up and walking into the cell seeing Hershel begin to get up.
I looked down to the stump on his leg and gave a stern look to Hershel. I wished I would have been there when Hershel got bit. Maybe I could of stopped it ? I just felt a bit bad on the part of a old man getting amputated, especially someone as kind hearted as Hershel.
" Just take your time." Lori said giving a hopeful smile to Hershel.
" Daddy don't push yourself." Beth said reaching over seeing her father stumble a bit. He returned one back and cocked his head to the side with a chuckle.
" What else am I going to do ? Can't stand looking up at the bottom of that bunk anymore." Hershel said almost falling, but it was Beth and Lori by his side making sure he didn't.
" I can tape some Comics to it." I remarked causing the old man to laugh a bit at the kind and comical gesture.
" You know, I think I'm pretty steady."
" That's a good start. What to take a rest ?" Lori asked seeing the few steps he made, but the old man was stronger then he seemed. He shook his head to the pregnant women with determination in his eyes.
" Rest ? Let take a stroll." Hershel said making Carl and I smile.
Outside, I saw in the distance Mr. Grimes, Daryl, and Glenn working on the terrain of the prison while Maggie, T-dog, and Carol moved the cars around. I still had that gut wrenching feeling that normal wasn't normal. First to say, what kid can say they live in a Prison as a home and they didn't have to commit a crime to enter. The second would be the months we had on the run. Normal was gone back at the farm.
" Got you here if you need it." Lori said standing in front of Hershel while he climbed down the stairs.
" Just take your time on these steps." Beth said seeing her father swing back and forth. Carl and I both grabbed the swinging arms and helped him settle back to a stable stand.
" Would a peg leg help ?" I joked again earning a laugh from the others.
" You cleared all the bodies out ?" Hershel asked crutching his way through the court yard like it was nothing." It's starting to look like a place we could really live in."
" Last thing we need is you falling." Lori said more worried about Hershel then herself. The small group walked towards the fences getting a better look to their new home. Hershel was right, this place could be a home for them.
