It was late at night when Akeno woke me up. She gently shook my shoulder till my eyes opened.
"I'd like to talk to you, if it's okay." She said as she sat on the side of my bed where she pulled her tail up onto her lap and started to pet it nervously.
"About what?" I asked as I rubbed my eyes and rolled onto my back before looking at her.
"Why are Lattamers treated so badly?" She asked.
"Because we're often forced to take positions as maids or servants because we don't come from here. We came from the Realm of Wolves, so in the other Realms we're poor." I answered.
"So why live here?"
"I was born here, and I don't enjoy change." I told her. "I don't like things being so different."
"Well you shouldn't worry about change, because its not something any of us can control." She explained as she looked ahead of herself at the door, trying to avoid my gaze.
"I'm supposed to be able to control fate, so I should be able to prevent change."
"Fate cannot be avoided, only delayed." She said.
"Only delayed huh? Then what am I good for?"
"Maybe one day you'll prevent change. But until then, you're just you." Akeno said. "A Master Thief who's not afraid of demons."
"I was scared shitless of Minerva. I thought she was going to lose her shit and kill me." I confessed. "I'm just glad she didn't call my bluff."
"I am too." She nodded.
"So why did you really come up here?" I asked.
"Well... We share a room." She said. "And I wanted to comfort you."
"Comfort me?" I questioned. "I was sleeping."
"But you were not comfortable." She answered. "Your head was buried in the pillow, so I assume you fell asleep crying?"
I stared at her for a moment, but I held up my walls. "So?"
"You've seen too much death. When you attacked the guards taking me, I sensed no malice in you. You only wounded them so they could not chase you. You didn't want to kill them."
"I'm not upset about killing humans."
"You feel guilty for the demons you've killed?" She asked.
"No. The demons I've killed were monsters who would never stop killing until they were killed. And some humans deserve death too. I agree."
"Like the King." She nodded.
"But I killed the demons because I had no choice. Minerva can storm the castle and force the King to step down, but instead she wants him dead. She can save his life, but she doesn't want to."
"Are you saying she has something else planned?" Akeno asked.
"I don't know. She could have sold me out to the guards, but she didn't. It could be because I'm the only one who can kill the King. But it can also be because everything she says is the honest truth."
"She doesn't want to kill people herself."
"The friend she had over was a Nightshade. They don't get along with the other clans because Nightshades protect humans. So Minerva could be the same. I mean, she is taking care of an orphanage."
"You're over thinking this."
"Am I?"
"Take off your shirt and I'll give you your answer then." She sighed.
I was about to question her, but then I understood what she meant, and I sat up and pulled off my shirt then turned my back to her.
Her hands found their way to my back and she started tracing the lines. "Minerva's goals are pure of heart. Her methods are not so. The King must die for her outcome. He has an heir, but she doesn't want the heir to be killed, and until his heir takes the throne, the people will suffer."
Then she stopped, her hand touching a line I knew all too well. The tattoo's hid it from view, but you could feel that it was there.
"You were a slave." Akeno said as she turned me around and looked into my eyes.
"I don't want to talk about it."
"They hurt you so easily!?"
"Akeno stop I-"
"Why would they do that to you?"
"Because I was a worthless cat!" I yelled. "I was born into it along with my brother. My mother got sick so they killed her, and we killed them and set the others free! Then we left it behind us okay! I'm not a slave anymore I'm me!"
Her arms wrapped around me and she pulled me into a tight hug. She was a nature guardian, and slavery was not nature. It was cruel even in her eyes. Her ears were flat against her head and so were mine as my chin rested on her shoulders. My hands found their way to her back and I gripped her blouse tightly trying so hard not to cry at the memories. Trying to keep them pushed away.
"Stop holding it in." She told me.
"N-no. I don't want them."
Her grip tightened like something had crossed her mind and she leaned back and looked into my eyes. She held my chin up so I would be forced to look back at her.
"Merge with me." She said.
"W-what?" I asked as I blinked back my tears.
"I want to share your pain. I want to help you control your visions. It won't be perminant, I can leave at any time. I just want... I want to help you."
"It will hurt?" I asked, remembering what her thoughts felt like when in my head.
"No." She shook her head. "Merging is different. Its mind and soul. You're not possessing me, we're sharing everything. It won't hurt a bit."
I wanted to say no. I probably should have said no. But my weak minded state betrayed me, and not only did I nod to her, giving her the okay, but I pulled her into a tight hug, as if begging her to take the pain away.
Then she was sinking, not down but towards me, into me. It should have hurt, but all I could feel was warm, and happy. And when she was gone, no longer in my arms, I fell backwards against the bed my head leaned back, my whole body felt a blaze in flame.
But it wasn't a painful flame. But like the warm comfort of a campfire. Something I was familiar with.
The nine tailed fox is often depicted as a fire spirit. And now I believed that Akeno was truly a Goddess. Her mind felt so close, like it was with mine. Picking through my memories and storing away the bad ones so they couldn't make me unhappy.
But the only thing I could really pay attention too, was how friggen good it felt to have Akeno inside my body, mind, and soul.
