Akeno shook me awake for the third time since we started our ride to Yeager. My vision had drained my strength and energy, and left me... Well... Drained, I guess.
"Are you sure you're alright?" Akeno asked.
"I'm fine." I lied.
She rolled her eyes. "Its another days trip anyway. We should stop and make camp."
"We just left home."
"We've been on the road for six hours Mikky." Akeno answered.
"Oh.... Lets make camp..."
Akeno hopped off the Star, and grabbed her reins, leading her into the forest. I had passed out on her back, and only woke when Akeno pulled me off.
She didn't throw me to the ground, as Star was laying down. Instead, she pulled me down so I was leaned against Star's side, using her as a pillow.
When I was able to focus on her, she was lighting a fire. I blinked, and she was laying on my chest, the fire nothing but smoke.
By the time I had regained control of my sleep patterns, it was the middle of the night, and the flame had gone out. Star's head was rested against the ground as she slept, and Akeno was laying on top of me. For some reason, her hands were under my shirt, but resting on my stomach. She must have fallen asleep reading my tattoos.
Her tail was coiled up beside us, and I couldn't help but pet it happily, enjoying her unnatural warmth that radiated from her body.
Camping was never my thing. Usually I would stay awake for the days it took to get home, or I would sleep on a roof top where no one would find me. Camping always made me nervous.
While I was sleeping a man could walk up and rob me blind, or handcuff me, or kill me before I stand.... Or sleep.
I sighed deeply to myself, and Akeno stirred at my breath. Her ears twitched and her tail moved across the forest floor, out of my hand's reach for the moment, before she moved it to her other side and hugged it.
I couldn't help but smile. She was so cute, and beautiful. I couldn't help but crave her touch and presence.
Her ears flattened against her head and her warmth vanished. This loss of warmth was not welcoming in the cold night, but it also told me something was wrong. Do Gods get nightmares?
Then, she flinched, and sat up, to which I was glad she did. Her eyes opened wide as she looked around, panting. Her hair was tinged in flame, and in her panic she had lost control of her fire.
I was glad she had sat up when she did.
"Akeno?" I called to her.
Her head whipped around, and her eyes locked with mine, her breath still labored from her shock. Her eyes filled with fear, absolute and complete fear. Then, her eyes softened, and regret took their place. Her ears lowered against her head sadly, her flaming hair dimmed, and she slouched a bit as she stared at me sadly.
"Akeno? What happened?" I asked.
"I had a nightmare, but I am not blessed with your vision, and so my dream will remain so." She answered.
The fear she had in her eyes. It wasn't remembering her dream. It was too powerful, too fresh.
In that split second, it was me she was afraid of.
"Tell me your dream." I told her as I gently took her hands and held them softly.
Her head lowered, and sadness took her expression. "You, weren't you. There was no reason for it either, which further proves its lies. You were at first trying to kill me, firing arrows through the trees, and your marksmanship was deadly, so I shifted and kept running. I don't know how you caught up, but you did, and you grabbed me by the tail and lifted me up, a smile on your face. Your amber eye was a cruel blood red."
I had been enthralled? Or did she picture me as a demon?
"That was when I woke up." She finished, her head lowering. Tears did not fall from her eyes. If it were me I would have cried all over her. Unless she was ashamed of her dream.
"Perhaps Elysium wanted you to see that?"
Anger crossed her expression. "You mean to say that will happen!? That you would try to kill me?"
"Never!" I retorted, anger shrouding my own voice. "But you said my eye was red like a demon, and in my vision Merlin mentioned a demon, and it was Alice he showed me. Alice is a vampire, a Daybreaker! Perhaps Elysium gave you a warning about what Alice might do."
Her expression softened once again, and this time she lowered her head. "I'm sorry for yelling."
"Don't be." My grip on her hands tightened. "You have your rights."
"I should never think of you as someone to hurt me. You risked your life to save a fox, and you kept children from starving. You are a good person. A great person. I have no right to think of you as anything else."
I smiled softly. "I was greedy before."
"But you aren't now." She leaned forward and kissed me softly. "Should we head out? If we leave now we can make it to Yeager by the afternoon."
"Yes. Lets." I nodded.
We packed up, woke up the horse and carried on our way, Akeno's arms now tightly wrapped around my waist.
