Toni

Chapter 1

I know something is up. Janet has been acting very odd today, and not in a bad way but in an unassertive kind of way. Today is my birthday, and she has yet to say anything about it. I have a feeling she forgot about my 30th birthday. One of the best days of my life may not be so great because my best friend of 18 years has forgotten my big day. And not only is she acting weird, my family is acting strange as well....everyone except my mother. She wished me a happy birthday but that's it. I have been raving on, and on about my birthday all month and everyone has forgotten about it? That's insane, and I'm very upset.

I was sitting in the kitchen of Janet's home drinking wine after a few hours of shopping. Her phone rings, and she immediately jumps down from the stool, and runs over to her purse. She snatches it out, and immediately puts it to her ear.

"Hello." She stated into the phone. "Oh hi, I'd been expecting your call all day."

Janet talked on the phone secretly for a few minutes. I just continued to drink my wine. I was still waiting for Janet to mention anything to me about at least an age, or cake. I would hop on the issue so quick, and tell her how hurt I am because she forgot my birthday.

Janet finished up her phone conversation, and quietly joins me back at the island. She takes a sip from her glass, and then she looks up at me.

"That was Marcus he's finally in town, and he wants to see us."

I let out an audible sigh.

Janet sits her glass down. "Toni I know you don't like him, but he said he wants to make things right with you. Just let bygones be bygones." She says.

"Fine. Let's go." I grab my clutch, the few items I brought from the store, and I head out the door.

Janet smiles. "That's my girl."

Half an hour later we arrive at a beautiful modern forest building with a fancy outdoor pool décor. Wooden patio looked freshly polished, and the large rectangular glass windows topped the look off, and it was very mesmerizing.

"Is this his property?" I ask as I get out of the car. Noticing it has gotten a little darker since before we left Janet's house.

She walks around the car, and over to my side. She shrugs her shoulder, and she scopes out the outside area. "I don't know, but this is the address he told me to meet him at." She says, and I look down at my outfit. I dust off my dress, and I rub down my stomach.

"How do I look?" I ask turning to face her with my arms out.

"You always look good, now let's go inside its cold out here." She says putting her arm around my neck, and across my shoulders as we walk upstairs past the bushes, trees and sections of ponds, and lakes. It was complete wilderness but beautiful, and it was something I'm not used to seeing every day. Janet knocks on the door, and she removes her arm from my shoulder to stuff both of her hands into her pocket.

She looks at me with a 'here we go' expression on her face. And I give her a sheepish smile.

Immediately after Marcus opens the door, he damn near jumps out of that corny grandma knitted sweater he was wearing to suffocate the hell out of Janet.

"JAY!! He exclaims as he hugs Janet, rocking her side to side. I just watch as I peek behind him to notice its dark on the inside. A frown appeared on my face immediately. What the hell, are we about to watch a movie or something. You have got to be kidding me.

After he finished hugging Janet he looks over at me.

"Hello Toni, you look stunning as always!" He says as he pulls me into a hug. I cut a look at Janet out the corner of my eye showing her I'm not impressed at all.
