Janet

            Chapter 4

As I’m lying in bed watching episodes of Orange is the new black on Netflix Toni’s ringtone blares from my phone. I search for it under between my sheets, and when I find it I immediately pick it up.

“Hey Toni.” I say holding the phone to my ear as I slouch back into the position I was in before.

“Just got back home from my date with Dimitri.”

“Ooh how was it?” I ask grabbing a handful of popcorn, tossing them into my mouth one by one.

“It was wonderful. When he first got to my place, he had flowers. Beautiful Roses…they smelt fresh, and sweet. Then when we got to the club I immediately got an idea of how expensive his taste it. It wasn’t no ran down club, it was a high class club with high class people. And Jan when I tell you we danced all night, I mean it. He’s a really good dancer, he kept up with me. And we danced to almost every song until my feet started hurting, til the point I was ready to go.”

Janet starts laughing. “What kind of shoes did you wear?” She asks.

“I wore those Giov. Heels you bought for me last year.”

“See…now that’s why your feet were hurting, those shoes are gorgeous but their hell. You should have worn wedges or something.”

Toni scoffs. “I wanted to look perfect for my date, and wedges just weren’t gonna cut it.”

“I guess. So are you going to see him again?” I ask as I pause the episode I just had playing.

“Yeah I’m going to see him again. He’s a really nice guy, and he’s such a gentleman.”

I smile loving all the positive things Toni has said about Dimitri. In the past she could never say anything nice about a guy. No matter how close to perfect he was, Toni always picked out something to criticize. “That’s good, I hope you two work out because I want to be a bridesmaid at least once before I die, and the clock is ticking Toni.”

“Whatever Janet, I’m not having this discussion with you because you’re in the same situation as me. I’m just actually making progress, you’re still stuck on Jeffrey’s confused ass, and I don’t know why.”

“I am not still stuck on Jeffrey, I haven’t talk to him since we had lunch a few days ago.” After I said that I cursed under my breath for slipping and saying it. I didn’t want to tell Toni because she always takes things and blow them out of proportion. I don’t know why she does that every time I mention Jeffrey, or any other guy.

“You two had lunch…why didn’t you tell me?” She asked raising her voice at me.

I furrow my brows, as I get an attitude. “I didn’t know I had to tell you every single detail about my life. Just because we’re best friends doesn’t mean you need to know everything. There’s a lot of things you don’t know Toni, it’s because I keep some things to myself and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.”

Toni sucks her teeth. “Okay Janet. I’m about to go to bed, I’ll talk to you later.”

Before I got a chance to say anything she hangs up. I look at the phone in disbelief.

“I know she didn’t just hang up on me.” I shake my head, and I put my phone on charger. I lay down, and I watch a few more episodes of Orange is the new black, and then I end up dozing off into a deep sleep.

She was walking home with a bag of groceries in her arm. She was struggling to keep the heavy brown bag up above her hip.  And when the wind blew hard, it made her stumble as she stayed on the patched grass which was made into a path, through a field. It was a shortcut to her apartment, and it made her feel safer since she wouldn’t have to walk past the houses of drug dealers, and street pimps.
