AoT SnK: (Jean x OC) Something worth fighting for

Prolouge

               "Mama! Mama! Look Gem and I made you a flower crown from the garden!" i yelled as my sister Gem and I ran towards our mom. My mother looked at us with her pale gentle pale blue eyes which reflected our happy faces. Her light brown hair hung over her shoulders in a loose braid as she bent down and hugged Gem and I. "It's beautiful girls" she smiled. Mom had lifted her small hand to brush my own light brown bangs to the side, then kissed the freckled noses of her two children.

                Mom was all we had left, ever since papa had died while out on an expedition with the Survey Corps. I had few memories of my papa, but it was more than Gem had, seeing as how she was two years younger than me and was too young to understand. Even though she may not remember him, mom would tell stories of how he was a brave soldier and how Gem got her green eyes from him. Gem was the perfect mix between our mom and dad, with mom's light brown hair and papa's dark green eyes, sometimes i was envious because i looked more like our mom than both, with mom's light brown hair and pale blue eyes.

                I turn to my sister with a wide smile on my face as we hear commotion from nearby. "The heros are back!" I grinned. Before Gem and I could run off our mom had stopped us to fix Gem's little side ponytail and adjust my low twin tails. After we cleaned up Gem and I ran hand in hand as we joined the crowd  that stared at the Survey Corps who had returned from their expedition. "Big sister?" Gem tugged on my sleeve. I turn to face her no longer looking at the Survey Corps or the scowls of the citizens. " what is it Gem?" i smiled. "Can we go the special spot before we head home?" she grinned. Gem and I would go to a secluded hill that overlooked the town. "If we hurry we can make it before supper!" i said as i grabbed Gem's hand and began running down the alleys to our special spot.

                The hill wasnt steep but after running, Gem and I were exhausted and sat down next to the maple tree. I leaned against the solid trunk and rested my eyes, feeling the cool breeze blow across my face. Gem had snuggled next to me holding on to my left arm as we overlooked the town Shiganshina. The sky changed to a light orange and illuminated the walls. " One day Gem, I'm gonna leave the walls,and see whats really out there."  I whispered. Just when i had thought she was asleep i hear her small voice whisper back " I wanna go to Kat" Gem rarely uses my name, she prefers big sister most of the time and i'm okay with that.

                After sitting for a while listening to the birds chirp and the trees sway, it caught my attention when everything went silent. Just after i had passed it off as nothing I see a Lightning bolt strike near the wall. The sound had woken Gem up immediately, making us stand up from our spots. "Kat what was that?!" Gem yelled scared. Before i could answer we see a giant head with no skin appear above the wall. My thoughts had muffled Gem's screaming. Is that a titan? It's so big. What is it going to do? I need to get Gem home now! Snapping back to reality i grabbed Gem's small hand and began dashing home. Got to make it home quickly! Mom is waiting for us. 

              " You got to keep up Gem!" i shouted back at her as we ran through the alley ways. We were almost to the main streets when we hear a loud crash and pieces of the wall flew in different directions in the town. Gem and i had been crouched down as i cover Gem from whatever debris  may hit us. Gem kept screaming frantically as towns people began running. Standing up i pull Gem to her feet and continue pulling towards home. "Gem we have to go get mom!" i yell. As we ran i risked a glance towards the hole in the wall. Too my horror titans began to walk through the hole, all different shape and sizes with grins on their faces. "Don't look Gem!" I screamed. We ran till we reached our now demolished home. "Mama! Mama!" i cried "Mama! Where are you?!" 

                I looked around quickly, the titans were coming closer to our side of town. Tears filled my eyes as i was beginning to lose hope, then a familiar voice yelled behind me. "Gem! Kat! Thank god your safe!" our mom shouted behind us. "Mama!" Gem and I shouted in unison as we ran to cling to our mother. "Mama whats going on?" Gem said unsuccessfully holding back her tears. "We have to get to the boats quickly. C'mon girls take my hand." we did as our mom instructed and began running to the river. We were halfway there when a titan started following behind us, A murderous gleam in its eye. "Mama!" i cried " the titan is behind us!"  My mom turned around and stared at the titan like she was making an important decision. Then she release our hands and turned to face us.

                "I love you both so much. Always remember that." She whispered. I felt tears sting my eyes. "Mama.."i said "shh, Kat i want you too take your sister and run to the boat. Promise me you will make it aboard and watch over your sister no matter what." she insisted. "i-i promise.." i choked. I knew what our mom planned on doing. She was going to lure the titan away giving us a chance to escape. Tears rolled down my cheeks, i couldnt stay strong any longer. Mom had petted my head trying to soothe me. " Kat don't cry." She smiled. " you look so beautiful when you smile, promise me you too will always smile." Gem nodded as she covered her face with her small shaking hands. I mustered a small smile as the tears rolled down my cheeks. 

                Mom had grabbed a chain that was around her neck and handed it to me. A small silver wing was at the end of it. "It was your father's, i want you to take care of it Kat" she whispered. I nod not wanting to speak because i knew i would cry out if i did. Mom kissed our foreheads quickly and turned around. " Now keep your promise!" she yelled. "Bye mama..." i say as i grab Gem's hand and dash towards the boats. We turn around to see the titan pick mom up. She wasnt struggling though. Instead she looked at us and smiled before the titan had eaten her upper body. "MAMA!!!" I scream. Before i could reach out, the city soldiers had grabbed Gem and I and put us in the boat. It was cramped with the towns people, some crying, others silent as the try and process the fact that the titans got in.

                Gem clung to me sobbing as we sat against a wall. I could smell the fear coming from everyone in the boat, it was almost sickening. I scan the boat for familiar faces, landing on Eren, Armin, and Mikasa. Gem and I would run into them sometimes on the streets, we used to play games together, now that too is gone, along with our home, our family, and our innocence. Titans are heartless monsters, eating for pleasure, and destroying everything. They leave no hope for humanity, no light at the end of the tunnel. 'Promise me you'll always smile' Mom's words echoed through my mind. "I've decided" i whispered. Gem looks at me with her round green eyes, red with tears. "decided what?" she asked. " I'm going to be the light of hope. I'm going avenge Mama and Papa. Im going to protect you Gem" I smiled. Just smile through the pain. Smile through the heart ache, anything too keep Gem happy.

                I look in the direction of the boats destination. Wall Rose i thought. what will our lives be like now? I continued starring at the wall till i fell asleep. Mama...Papa...what will happen to us now?
