Life in Wall Rose was more difficult then i could have imagined. There wasnt enough food to go around and feed the fleeing refugees as well as the citizens of Wall Rose. Gem and I had no family left so we lived in the streets, making ourselves comfortable in small tunnel near a vegetable vendor. Finding a place to sleep was one less thing off my shoulders but i still had to worry about feeding Gem and keeping us both healthy. At first i thought the task was too great but i managed to find a opportunity as a below the radar delivery person. The job may have been petty but atleast it gave Gem and i more than just a bread a day. So i spent my days delivering notes, food, and some ' valuables' that the client didnt want anyone to know about. The job didnt take long, so i was back home too look after Gem in no time.
Gem tried to adjust to the new way of life, after she spent two weeks after we arrived just looking dull and lifeless. Those two weeks I smiled and pretended that everything was okay now, but i knew it wasnt. Gem finally opened up more and eventually started wandering the streets, making friends, laughing again. That still wasn't the end though. Kids who were originally from Wall Rose picked on the refugees, Gem included, saying it was our fault, but they are just repeating what they heard from their parents. They dont understand I thought they dont understand what loss is, not like we do...
Today I was running deliveries in the Trost district, it was one of my normal routes, but i hated it. I'd run the whole route just to avoid the local bullies, and that is a headache i don't want. I jogged down the street when i heard crying coming from my left. Three boys crowded around a smaller child, i couldnt tell who it was till i saw a familiar light brown side ponytail just barely shoot out into my eye sight. Gem...Dear god not again..I look around scanning everyone who was in the street. A few adults, a few children my age, one stood out to me though. A rather tall boy around my age, with dirty blonde hair and a undercut, he had stopped his walk when the commotion from the locals caught his attention. No time to worry about him, Gem needs me!
"HEY!" i shouted, getting both the three boys attention and the boy who had stumbled upon the scene. "Kat!" Gem called out. her face was bruised and dirty but i stopped the boys before the worst could come. "Leave her alone!" I yelled "If you have too pick on someone then let me take her place" Gem looked at me teary eyed. I can't just fight them or the city guard is going to be called, but if i could just get Gem away and safe then ill have to deal with a few bruises. "Fine, doesnt matter if you take her place, your both to blame for the titans breaking through wall Maria!" the black haired boy said. So he is the leader of this little gang? i asked myself. "You don't understand! It wasnt our fault the-"Gem cried out but i held up my hand to stop her. I look toward the boy with the undercut " Please watch over her for a minute" i said. The boy just nods and Gem runs over, hiding behind him. I look back towards th three local boys and walk forwards.
They began my beating almost immediately. The two 'grunts holding my arms to keep me from escaping, which i didnt. The boy with black hair kicked me in the gut sending a sharp pain in my abdomen, then continued with several punches to my face. The beating continued for a while, Gem screaming my name from behind the boy's back. I felt tears at the back of my eyes from all the pain but i kept them down. Just smile through the pain i reminded myself. I smiled in Gem's direction, she looked at me through her unshed tears and the boy she hid behind looked at me surprised. The three boys kept beating me till a city guard came into view. "Oh shit!" said a grunt. "The guard is here, Run!" the leader shouted as they ran off. I fell to my hands and knees before forcing myself up and walked towards Gem and the boy.
"Kat!"Gem cried as she clung to me. I patted her head gently, smiling at how innocent she looked clinging to my torso. "Your pretty stupid to just sit there and take that beating" the boy said. I smiled again, you have no idea. I held out my hand as i introduced myself. "I'm Kat, and this is Gem." The boy looked down at my hand then cautiously shook it. "The name is Jean" he grunted. I smiled at how awkward he was being. "Why are you smiling if you just got beat up?" he asked annoyed. "you really are stupid" he laughed. I joined him, it was a genuine laugh, even though i was insulted. Jean huh? /i didnt have many friends besides Armin, Mikasa, and Eren. But i rarely see them noww a days. "Well Jean" i smiled while shaking his hand " I hope to see you around again sometime" Jean laughed "I guess someone has to keep you guys out of trouble"
sure enough for the past few weeks Jean and I had crossed eachothers paths multiple times. Eventually we became friends, laughing, telling jokes, the time i spent with him made me feel like i when i was back home, when i was carefree. I began to be actually happy, my smiles werent fake, or forced, but genuine. Gem and I found life in Wall Rose more bearable, thought not perfect...we learned that almost a year after the incident of Wall Maria..
