The royal goverment had ordered that refugees work in the fields to improve the food shortages, but that wasn't the end of it. They also sent thousands of people, refugees and citizens alike, to go and claim Wall Maria. It was a impossible mission that makes me question the authority of the royal goverment. Stop that, you can't think like that if you want to serve the Survey Corps. I thought. My mind was consumed with anger that  we were forced to work in the fields and the citizens were forced to go out and die "with no hope at all..." i whispered. " What did you say Kat?" Gem asked from behind me. I turned around to face her wit a smile " oh nothing! haha hey i think we are almost done today" i said.

Gem and I had to work out in the fields along with the other refugees but managed to leave a liitle earlier than everyone else. "Kat" Gem called behind me "What is it Gem?" i asked. "Aren't we meeting up with Jean today?" she asked. Oh yeah, we try to hang out once a week, but with the field work Gem and I barely have anytime too. "mhm" i gave a short nod. "Lets hurry before we are late" I smiled as i grabbed Gem's hand and took off in a sprint. We dashed through the streets avoiding the citizens that occassionally walked across.

Breathing heavily, Gem and I leaned against the wall of  the vegetable shop exhausted. i heard a familiar laugh to my right. Sure enough Jean was sitting on a crate grinning at us like he won a prize. "Looks like you guys are late again." I laughed and sat across from him on a barrel, Gem took the crate next to me. "Oh shut up" i lsmiled, It was nice to take a break from the  fields and chat with Jean again. Gem and Jean talked about the troops coming back today. "Not even half of them came back!" Gem sighed, clearly dissappointed. I was starring at the sky sorting my thoughts, the sky was a light orange, just like it had been when mom had died...i thought.

I could hear Gem and Jean's voices but i wasnt paying attention to the coversation, I had my mind on the troops and the refugees. Most of all i was thinking of the titans, how they killed both my parents, and how so many lives were sacrificed. I settled on one thought at last I'm going to join the Survey Corps. " Jean" I said "yeah?" he replied. "We are almost old enough to join the soldiers right?" he nodded back. " I'm joining" he said " i want to join the city guard and live in the interior." he grinned. I knew deep down that i was hoping he would say that. I cant explain it but i wanted Jean to be safe, and if it was in the interior then so be it.

Jean leaned back. " What about you Kat?" he asked. I looked at Gem and we grinned at eachother. The silent agreement of Don't tell him passed between us. I faced him and grinned. "Its. A. Secret." Gem giggled next to me and Jean looked between us confused. "Fine, don't tell me" he grunted. I couldnt help but pat his head and smile "I'll tell you someday" Jean looked away embarrassed and I stopped patting him and looked back up at the sky. I could hear Gem making fun of Jean. My hand clutched the necklace with the silver wing that my mother had given to me. It was your fathers, now its yours i remembered her words. Mama, Papa, I will avenge you...and i will be the light at the end of the tunnel for humanity..i promise..

Gem and I said our goodbye's to Jean as we went seperate ways, Gem and I heading towards our tunnel that we now call home. Gem moved next to me that night. "Kat?" she whispered. "yeah?" i replied. " You really are going to join the Survey Corps. huh?" I nodded. "I will avenge Mama and Papa, I have to help humanity reclaim the world we once had...and i want to make this world a better place for you.." Gem clung to my arm silently crying. "I know you will sis" she sobbed. " I believe you will." I held Gem till she fell asleep, but i couldnt sleep if my life depended on it. So i looked at the streets, watching the wind move dust from the ground, maybe an occassional citizen passing through.

I began to think about where Gem would go when i left. Surely she could stay here i thought. but, what then? would Gem stay and help out in the fields? or would she go and join the soldiers whe she is old enough. I smiled sadly, Knowing Gem she would probably join the soldiers too..I wrapped my left arm around Gem holding her close, and pressed my forehead to hers. "I'll keep her safe, no matter what...." i murmured as i slowly fell asleep

The next morning i decided to talk to Gem about her plans when im gone. "I haven't really thought about it" Gem mused. I sighed with a mixture of relief but also dissappointment. "Well.." she began. I looked at her intently. "I want to join the soldiers too!" she smiled "but i'd have to wait till im old enough sooo,... i think im gonna work hard in the fields till i can see my sister again" Gem grinned. The thought warmed my heart, making me smile. "what branch?" i asked. Gem then looked down at her hands, almost ashamed. " I know people call the city guards cowards but..." she went silent thinking for a second before continueing " If what happened at Wall Maria happened here well..i could be a soldier who protects the citizens, stops deaths like Mama's from happening. I want to make the city guards better!" she finished with a determined smile.

Gem's determined look made my jaw drop as i stare at her. Gem's dream may sound like cowardice to others but, i understand what she means. Gem wants to help the citizens, not fight Titans. I pat her head gently as i smile. " I believe you will Gem, i believe it." After making sure Gem would be okay without me, I began too look forward to joining the soldiers, with my dream so close, time began to fly by and finally the day before I left for training came, and i was ready to go.
