CHAPTER 1: I Need to Figure This Out
The sound of rain pounded against the window as Lauren woke up that morning. She had dreaded this day, fearing to open her eyes and attempting to get away from the cruel effects of reality and make a run for the fantasy her mind had created. Today was her parents' funeral, and for obvious reasons, she isn't looking forward to it.
Lauren mustered as much strength as she could, sitting up on the edge of her bed with a grunt, giving herself a moment before she got up and went to get dressed. She didn't want this day to come, even if death was inevitable, everything felt like it was happening too fast and too soon.
Slipping on a black dress, she turned to look at her reflection in the mirror, patting herself down to get rid of any unwanted wrinkles while doing her best to blink away the tears that were brimming at the edge of her eyes. The memory of receiving the news of her parents' death still lingered in her mind, but she had to stay strong for Camila's sake.
~~
It was midnight. Lauren had just gotten into bed when the knocking started. Startled she had just gone to bed that night, automatically thinking that her parents must've had forgotten their keys as she wrapped her robe around herself, the pounding growing louder and insistent.
"HOLD ON! IM COMING," she raced down the stairs, pausing at the flash of red and blue flashing lights coming from the window her tired expression quickly changing. She prayed it was a mistake, hoping that it might be some prank or that the police cars were there for the neighbors. Wrapping her robe tighter around her figure, she opened the door, coming face to face with two officers, who gave her a grim look.
"Ms. Jauregui?"
"Y-yes?" Lauren stuttered "I'm very sorry to say this, but your parents were involved in a car accident." "A-are they okay? Why are you telling me this," she asked frantically. "Your parents were killed on impact." The news hit Lauren like a ton of bricks. She completely shut down, not hearing what else the officers had to say as she was on the floor screaming, the loud sobs waking up Camila, Lauren's 3-year-old sister who had walked to the edge of the stairs "Mami?" the little girl called, Lauren quickly heard this and ran to Camila. Camila could see the tears along her sister's face.
"Lolo? What wong?" Lauren took a shaky breath she didn't want to tell the girl, swallowing thickly, she spoke. "Mila, Mama and Papa" she gulped, trying her best to take deep breaths, only to break into sobs again. "T-they got very hurt." Camila looked up at Lauren, confused. "Hurt? Do they have a band-aid?"
Lauren hated doing this. She didn't want to have to do this but she had no choice. "N-no, baby, not that kind of hurt." She cleared her throat. "Remember how in church we talked about heaven?" Camila nodded "well because they got hurt," She paused. "T-they went to heaven." Lauren finally uttered, fresh tears continuously streaming down her face as she held her sister close.
"No!" Camila yelled.
"I know baby, I don't want this to be true," she whispered as the two sisters sobbed in grief.
~~
Lauren's flashback was interrupted by the baby monitor on her bedside table, signaling that Camila was beginning to wake up.
Lauren walked down the hall to Camila's room as she quietly opened the door to see her little sister sitting up on her bed and rubbing her eyes.
"Morning, Bubba," she said picking up the little girl and placing a soft kiss on her forehead. "Let's get you dressed, okay?" Lauren proceeded to try and get the girl ready, but she wouldn't budge. "I don't wanna go!" Camila cried, knowing where they were going. Lauren sighed. "I know, I know." Camila started to sniffle.
~~
Not long after, Lauren found herself sitting in front of the officer as he droned on and on. She didn't listen however, because she what this was going to be about, and she was not giving up Camila; not without a fight.
"So, Ms. Jauregui, we're gonna get you to fill out these papers. Once that is done, we can find Camila a foster home as soon as possible-" Lauren looked at the officer confused then looked at her sister sitting beside her.
"what do you mean? Camila is not going anywhere, she's staying with me."
"With all due respect, but you are only eighteen and she is three-years-old.
There is a lot of responsibility when it comes to taking care of a child," the officer replied.
"I'm aware," she bit back. "No go, Lolo" Camila whimpered, clutching her hand. "I want to be her legal guardian." Lauren declared, sitting up straight in her seat. "Miss Jauregui, if you would just think about this-" "No! Camila is all I have, and she needs me. She will stay with me, and I will not hear another word about this!" Lauren said with finality. "I will go to court if I have to but I'm begging you. I'm not leaving her now or ever."
~~
The funeral was small and intimate. They didn't have much family, so it was only the two sisters, friends and co-workers of their parents who had come to pay their respects, as well as Normani, Ally, and Dinah, Lauren's best friends.
The service came and went and Lauren didn't shed a tear, not even when the caskets were lowered to the ground. She had already cried enough as she just held Camila's hand, but she still felt the tears trying to break out, and she feared that someone might see her in such a vulnerable state.
The reception was not any better, many people she either barely knew or didn't know at all were sharing their condolences. She politely thanked them but it felt useless after constantly hearing the same words coming out of anyone else's mouth. She just wanted to get out of there and go home.
Camila became restless when everything was done, snuggling into Lauren's neck as she whined so they left to go home. Lauren changed Camila and herself out of their dresses, putting her sister down for a nap before retreating into the kitchen. She sat at the table, her Macbook in front of her, a pen in her hand, a calculator and a mountain of papers by her side as she began to make some calculations. The costs had piled up. How was she going to afford a babysitter, bills and have time for Mila? Lauren was thankful that her parents had left some money but that could only last them for so long and she had Mila's future to think about.
After an hour of crunching numbers, paying bills and figuring out how she would be able to handle everything, Lauren heard Camila coming down the stairs as she stumbled into the kitchen
"Hi, Lolo,"
"Hey, nugget," Lauren picked her sister up and set her on her lap, kissing her cheek.
"What doing?" Camila pointed to the countless papers on the table.
"I'm just figuring everything out" Lauren smiled softly.
Camila yawned, curling up against her big sister.
"I miss Mami, and Papi" Camila mumbled.
"Me too".
