Tom squeezed my hand as the tech started the ultrasound. She moved the wand across my stomach and pushed buttons on her machine, then paged in the doctor.
Dr. Klipper was so far wonderful. She'd confirmed my pregnancy and preformed the physical exam. When she came in the room, she lit up.
"So, I hope your ready for this." She said. She turned the screen so we could look. "This right here," She pointed to the screen. "Is a head. This here is an arm." She moved to another area of the screen. "This is another head."
My eyes got wide. "Twins?" I asked.
"Congratulations!" She said. I looked up at Tom, who was clearly stunned.
I reached up and patted his chest, and he leaned in and kissed me.
"Considering your history and family history, I want to put you on modified bed rest." She said. "I understand you are in school, and you may continue to attend classes and navigate the campus. I do think you need to restrict yourself to around four to five hours of interment light activity. Walking around campus and around the house is fine, if you want to take an easy turn outside for twenty to thirty minutes, that's fine. You may still go shopping and live life, but take frequent breaks. I don't want you walking longer than fifteen minutes without taking a break." She said. "No standing still in one place for longer than ten minutes. No public transportation, it's too unpredictable, and you are too high risk." She turned back to the screen. "Babies are a good size. A little smaller than a lemon. You are about thirteen weeks."
She flipped a switch and I could hear two fast and strong thumping sounds. My eyes filled with tears as I listened to the heartbeats of my babies. Tom kissed my forehead.
"At this time, it's still safe to have sex. I encourage it actually, with all my patients." She said. "It helps improve blood circulation in your body, and the babies as well. It also helps prepare your pelvis for labor and helps you control your bladder. Another benefit is that it prevents pre-eclampsia, which you are at a high risk of, and it will help prevent you from getting a cold or the flu." She paused and smiled. "It's also more enjoyable for you, Mummy."
Tom and I both smiled. She put the wand on the tray table next to her and wiped the jelly off of my stomach.
"I'll have my nurse bring in some information for you, what you should and shouldn't do. Things you can expect, and things that might cause concern. I'd like to see you again in about three weeks." She reached over to the counter and grabbed a booklet. She wrote something on it. "I estimate your due date to be March twenty-forth." She handed me the booklet and stood up.
"Thank you." I said. I flipped through the booklet. It was a calendar of how the babies would progress, and she'd written in our due date.
"Congratulations again." She said leaving the room.
Tom helped me stand up, and I adjusted my pants back into place. Tom folded me in his arms and kissed me lovingly on the lips.
When we got home, I called my aunt to tell her the news. She congratulated me and we talked about my appointment. She told me when we had a theme for the nursery to let her know, and she'd make a curtain and bed set.
"That reminds me," Tom said as we ended the call. "I want to show you something."
He lead me upstairs, then to the attic. I'd never been up there, but I was not expecting the smell of fresh paint and carpet. Confused, I followed him up.
The stairs emptied into a large space, laden with sewing machines, work tables, and shelves of crafting supplies. There was a hallway that Tom said lead to undefined space.
