I opened the door to the kitchen and ushered Karen and her girlfriend, Sadie, inside. Karen still hadn't told me why she didn't tell me she was in London, but I knew now that she was here on vacation. I hadn't known until I crossed the street and she introduced us that she'd even had a girlfriend. I felt so out of the loop.
Bobby came running to us, barking. He sniffed both Karen and Sadie and once he deemed them not a threat, darted into the yard. I kicked off my shoes and hung my jacket on the hook, my visitors did the same.
"Can I offer you guys some tea?" I asked. I walked over to the stove and picked up the kettle to make sure it had water in it. It felt full, so I set it down and turned on the burner.
"I'd love some." Karen smiled. She nudged Sadie, who just nodded. "Where's Tom?"
"I'm actually not sure." I said. I'd already decided not to tell her I had moved out. I didn't want it getting out. I trusted Karen not to say anything, but I didn't know Sadie. "Have a seat."
Sadie and Karen sat on the barstools while I pulled out a selection of tea. Karen chose a jasmin blend, and Sadie grabbed the earl grey. I pulled out a chi for myself and put the basket away. I pulled out three mugs and waited for the kettle to whistle.
"So, Karen, were you going to tell me you were in town?" I asked, getting right to the heart of the matter, and the thing that was eating away at me the most. Karen and I weren't exactly close, too much painful history, but we usually told eachother when we were traveling. My anxiety crept in and suggested that maybe she didn't want me to know she was here, but that didn't make sense because she's the one that flagged me down.
"I was planning on surprising you. We were on our way here, actually." She smiled. I relaxed. Of course it would be something that simple. Thankfully she saw me before she got here, she wouldn't have even got passed the gate, since Tom wasn't home. I smiled at her.
"I'll give Tom a call and see when he plans on being home." I pulled my phone from my pocket as the kettle whistled. I turned off the burner and filled the three mugs. I set the kettle by the sink and pulled up Tom's number on my phone and hit call. He answered on the third ring.
"Hello, Darling." He said. The background was loud with screaming children.
"Hey." I replied. "Uh, where are you? It sounds crazy."
"I'm over at Ben's." He answered. I laughed.
"So yeah, crazy. Five kids, you guys are brave." I joked. "When are you planning on being home? We have company."
"We do? Who?" He asked.
"My sister." I told him.
"She's a bit far from home." He replied. "No, Chris. Give it back to Lucy."
"Yeah, she's here on vacation with her grilfriend, and decided to surprise us." I explained. I dropped my tea bag in my mug.
"I'll gather the kids and head home then." He said. "I think Lucy and Boyd are a little overstimluated right now anyway."
"I'll see you soon then." I said ending the call. I set my phone on the counter. "He's just around the corner at a friends house, he'll be home shortly."
Once our tea was steeped I pointed out the trash, and we all tossed our spent bags. I then ushered them through the dining room and into the billiard room. We sat in the sitting area and sipped our tea in silence.
"So, tell me about yourself, Sadie." I said. She was a small mousey girl, like my sister. Unlike Karen, who was basically a thin carbon copy of me when I hadn't died my hair, Sadie had striking red hair and brown eyes. She had plump pink lips and a dusting of freckles. She also had a thick irish accent, which really intrigued me. I really wanted to know how she'd met my sister.
