7…6…5 more days!

The wolves are coming today. But not only they, but also Edward and Bella arrive today and that made me awaiting their arrival even more. Carlisle had his last day of work today, because it wasn’t possible to have the entire week off, so he only had the last days…

The Denalis called this morning and told us that they were on their way already. Maybe they might even get here at the same time.

Carlisle and I were still not talking much. I knew that he wanted to and often tried to, but let it go a second before speaking to me. I wanted to go to him, but I knew that the only thing I could do would be telling him the truth…

We hadn’t argued since the last time two days ago and I was relieved but also devastated, because that was actually the last time Carlisle had told me he loved me and had held me in his arms. I missed him…

I knew he missed me, too, but the stress was too much for both of us to take and then the secret; it was simply too much. The last thing that still made me believe that he loved me was that he always watched me at night. I could not really sleep since our baby’s on the way because he or she is very active at night plus the stress, so I was only half asleep at times. These were the times that I noticed Carlisle sitting on the bed next to me and watching me. I heard him sigh and murmur “I love you” so often and he sometimes even stroked my back or arm. He was still in there, but I had to take the first step to get us back together.

This morning, Carlisle did the same again and even kissed my hand before leaving when I was still asleep. I woke up only two hours later, at 8 o’clock, and got ready for today.

It seems that I was handling it all extraordinarily well with the Volturi, Carlisle, the baby… but to be honest, I wasn’t sure myself why I wasn’t crying the entire time, because that was what I actually felt like. But something inside me made me get up every morning and made me live through the day. I believe it was actually hope that made me do these things. So with that working yet again, I walked into my closet and got my outfit for today.

I chose a nearly knee-length skirt that was multi colored with pastel nuances together with a white top and a grey cardigan, so that my slight baby bulge wasn’t really noticeable. With that I chose light grey tights and light brown suede boots. Alice would be proud of me, I smirked.

I let my hair open and rushed downstairs after getting ready. I didn’t bother with makeup. I looked around, but couldn’t hear Carlie’s pitter-patter or other sounds. I walked into the living room, our unofficial meeting room, and there were Alice and Jasper. Alice was already looking at me with a huge smile and Jasper looked up as soon as I was standing in the room. “Morning,” they greeted me. “Good morning,” I smiled and sat opposite them in one of the armchairs.

“Carlie’s out for a walk with Rose and Emmett. I’m sorry, they wanted to ask you, but also didn’t want to wake you up,” Alice told me.

“It’s fine, I would have said yes anyway,” I smiled. “But why are they out so early?” I asked a little puzzled. It was not even 9 o’clock.

Alice shrugged. “I don’t really know. I think Rosalie needed that time rather than Carlie, but you know that Rose rather needs time to process it all and Carlie is a huge help to her.”

“I know, I hope it will help her,” I sighed.

Jasper looked up again. “We hope so, too. She has her own way of dealing with everything, but she is strong and will make it,” Jasper told me confidently. I sighed and somehow his statement created tears in my eyes. He rushed to my side and hugged me. “It’s not your fault. We love you all. Don’t worry,” he whispered and swung us lightly around.

“Thank you,” I sobbed and held him close. So much for handling it all so well…

Jasper turned us around to Alice, as she was rushing over to me as well, stroking my back. She leaned her head against my shoulder and held me close. Suddenly she was rigid and closed her eyes. I looked up from Jasper’s chest and worriedly saw that she probably had a vision. Jasper held Alice to him with his other arm, as he was still holding me with the other.

“It’s so frustrating,” Alice whined and leaned against Jasper. “What have you seen?” I asked her. “It’s the same scene every time… We are facing the Volturi as we had planned, but as soon as you are involved I see nothing. Nothing! I’ve seen even more before, I have no idea why I can’t see you at all anymore. It’s like you changed or something… Or maybe it’s the wolves involved plus Carlie. I cannot see them as well,” she sighed frustrated.

Bella was right after all, I thought, but returned to soothing Alice. “We’ll see how it will progress. We might have had a slight advantage knowing the development of the confrontation, but we cannot change the facts,” I told her.

“I know, I know. But if you are so used to seeing even the slightest change in your future, then this is more than slightly unnerving and frightening,” she admitted. Jasper soothed her when the doorbell rang. “See? I haven’t even seen that!” Alice grumbled and sat on the couch. Jasper sighed and with an apologetic smile sat next to her. I threw a last glance to them before I walked over to the door.

I knew that it couldn’t be Rose and Emmett with Carlie, but rather Edward and Bella with the wolves or the Denalis. Let’s see…

I opened the door and there were Tanya, Kate and Carmen with their mates. They all smiled at me and Carmen engulfed me in a hug instantly. “How are you holding up?” she murmured and scrutinized my appearance. “As good as can be expected, I guess,” I told her. She hugged me again, this time stronger and then whispered into my ear, “I am here for you if you need me.” “Thank you,” I whispered back and hugged her closer.

A moment later she let go and the others hugged me as well. Only Garrett kept his distance, because he was still new to the vegetarian lifestyle and didn’t want to take the risk, so he rather waved and winked at me. They then walked straight into the living room where Alice and Jasper were greeting our new guests as well.

Only minutes later, we heard the front door opening and in walked Rose and Emmett with the pram. Emmett was unusually quiet, so I guessed Carlie was sleeping.

I walked over to them and Rose hugged me as soon as I was close enough. “How are you doing?” I asked her. “I’m fine, I just needed some time off,” she smiled and kissed my cheek. I nodded with a smile and then looked into the pram. Carlie was actually slowly but surely getting a bit too big for it, but she still had enough space to stretch her limps in every direction. Like that, she had her arms stretched over her head and her left leg was nearly hanging outside. She was nearly covered with her warm pink blanket, so that only her face and arms were really visible.

“She has grown so big but also so beautiful,” Carmen murmured from behind me. “I know, she can already walk,” I told her. “Oh, I wouldn’t have thought that, but I mean, Nessie was developing so fast as well.” “Yeah,” I smiled and Carmen laid her hand on my shoulder.

“Are you really fine?” she whispered so that only I could hear her. I turned around to her and thought about my answer. “Carlisle and I are not talking much anymore and our marriage is about to break apart because of me,” I told her without hiding the truth from her. She was stunned for a moment, but snapped out of it and engulfed me in a hug again. “Oh my God, I would have never anticipated that answer. You two are inseparable… But I don’t think that it is because of something that you could possibly have done on your own,” she told me.

“But it is my fault,” I said but didn’t look at her but rather watched Carlie again. “You can talk to me whenever you want to, Esme, I am here for you. And even if you cannot tell me everything, I can still be there to at least listen to you,” she soothed me and once again laid her hand on my shoulder. “Thank you,” I murmured. She let go after a few moments and walked back into the living room.
