*READ CHAPTER 18 BEFORE THIS*
7 years later
Today was the day that marked seven years. Seven years since Jungkook died. Seven years since the day Sunflower went on a year long hiatus. She could still see the look on his face when her mask came off and realized it was her the whole time.
"It wasn't your fault."
"Don't blame yourself."
"He wouldn't you to suffer."
Those were the things that everyone told her for months. Miles was there for her through it all and helped her move on. After a year went by she was able to put her suit back on without feeling guilt or sadness.
Jungkook wouldn't have wanted that for her.
She was sitting in front of his grave, she did this at least once a month. Miles was standing a few feet behind her, giving her some privacy. He knew something like this needed as much privacy as possible. He stood beneath a willow tree, leaning against it as the wind blew the leaves. A few fell to the ground.
Two years after his death was when Miles and Ariana got together after he kissed her on a moonlit night in Brooklyn. He hesitated at first, not wanting to make her uncomfortable. Maybe it was too soon; the last thing he wanted to do was rush her.
Then when she kissed him back everything came together. She fell in love. It felt strange, wondering how Jungkook would feel about it. He would've been happy for her, she knew that. After all the time they spent together after Jungkook's death she started to fall for the sweet Brooklyn boy. He helped her cope.
Then three years after that they got engaged. Their wedding would be in the following summer, it now being mid October. The ring on her finger was shining in the sunlight.
"I still wonder what things would be like if I never showed up to your apartment that night. If I acted a little quicker in that room. I still blame myself. I think a part of me always will."
Jungkook's presence was sitting beside her the entire time. Every time she came here he was right beside her, telling her things she'd never hear.
"I'm not mad at you. I forgive you. Please don't blame yourself." He repeated over and over again. His voice would fade into nothing every single time.
"I'm so sorry." She cried. "You were my best friend and I failed you. I'm so sorry."
"Please don't cry. I'm still with you. I'll always be with you."
"All I wanted to do was protect you. I'm so sorry."
Miles came up behind her and rubbed her back. She wiped her tears and stood up. Jungkook smiled at them, he loved them together. Miles made her happy and Jungkook was glad someone was there for her. Whenever she told him they were engaged he was so happy for them. That's all he wanted for her.
Happiness.
He'd be there to see it. Just not in the way she wanted him to.
"Maybe one day I'll get to see you again. In a better place. You're still my best friend and I love you."
Reluctantly, she walked off. Miles had an arm around her and comforted her as she cried. She cried every time she came.
Jungkook waved goodbye then he faded away. His presence would return when she came back. It always did.
The bouquet of sunflowers, laying gently on the grave, was a sign of beauty amongst the sadness.
They were his favorite. They'd always be his favorite.
What Ariana said the night they were outside his room was right.
"Aren't you the sunflower though?"
"No, my dear, it's you."
He was the sunflower all along.
epilogue ending to sunflower.
