“Smile. Jennie. You need to smile. Even if it’s hard.” I told my reflection one morning. My arms hurt because my mom beat me, two nights before. Yeah, you heard it. She beat me two nights before yet my whole body still felt sore.

My mom lost the lottery. That’s why she hit me. Never did she win. That is why I always end being beaten up because of a stupid lottery. She said I was a pain and I carried a curse.

“Mom, I’m going. Goodbye.” I said as I slammed the door.

“Don’t forget to buy me a lottery ticket! Be home at six!”  I heard her shout.

Oh gosh.

Before going to school, I saw a truck beside our house. “A family might be renting the house beside ours.” I told myself.

When I arrived in our school, all eyes were on me. I suspected the gossipers already knew why I wasn’t with Kai. Three days had passed since I caught him making out with the cheerleader. Kai  and I never spoke to each other since that incident.

“I suppose Kai broke up with her. She’s such a bore.” I heard a girl say. “Look at her. She’s so… so… yuck”

I walked past them. I was sorta used to them. No one ever, ever, ever liked me. I was an outcast ever since I enrolled in this school.

“Kai has a new girl friend that’s why they’re not together!Krystal!” A guy shouted. My heart sank. Krystal was the cheer leader everyone adored. I looked down and walked fast. I hid my face with my long hair from the people around me.

All of a sudden, I bumped into something… someone.

“Are you stupid or stupid?” I heard a guy shout in front of me. I looked up and was shocked.

Oh gosh. Kai.

I noticed that Krystal was all over him. I pushed him. “Move away you stupid moron!”  I started to walk.

“Jennie wait up!” He shouted.

I stopped in my tracks and opened my ears to him. He said slowly, “Thanks for the two dull years you gave me. I ran out of enthusiasm. You’re boring. I couldn’t help but be attached to a beautiful babe.”

I turned around. “Right Krystal?” Then, they kissed passionately. The crowd in the corridor cheered them as I walked out annoyed.

“He fooled you.”  I repeatedly said to myself. “I hate myself”

“Ms. Kim!” I looked back and wiped my eyes. It was Mr. Gee, our class adviser.

“Yes Mr. Gee.”

“Congratulations.” Huh? I was appalled.

“Why sir?”

“You’re a candidate.”

“Candidate for what?” As far as I knew, I didn’t join any contest.

“For expulsion.”

“What the…”  I almost shouted. I was a candidate for expulsion. As in E-X-P-U-L-S-I-O-N.

He pulled me and showed me my grades. “Look, you got five failing grades.”

“I can stay in detention like for ten days for me not to be expelled. Or even twenty.”

“Your detention days are over Ms. Kim.” I felt the tears rush down my cheeks as he left me.

What else could I ask for?

Abusive mother. Fraud boyfriend. Failing grades.

After classes, I went straight to the football field. I sat in one of the bleachers and watched the players as they continued their practice. I smiled as I remembered Mr. Football player. He was indeed a gentleman and I really liked his company. However, it was still a mystery if I’d meet him again.

“Someday… I hope I can see you once again Mr. Football player.” I whispered to myself.

I leaned onto my bag and closed my eyes. The fresh air gave me peace.

“… Wake up kiddo.”

I raised my head only to see a guy looking at me. I quickly moved away. I didn’t realize I fell asleep.

“Hey, who are you? And what are you doing here?”

“Can’t you feel it? It’s raining…”

I was shocked. I didn’t know the guy I talked to, but he resembled someone-- Mr. Football Player.

I looked up to the sky. It was definitely not raining. “It’s not raining. Who are you?!” I started to pack my things and looked at my watch. It was already five forty-five. UH-OH.

“Look. I’m just a concerned student here. Believe me. It’s raining.”

“Whatever, whatever.” I stood and walked away.

“Wait!” I glanced as he ran after me. He almost plunged into the ground. “Ouch.”

“Stupid.”

I ran fast and left him there. I needed to be home by six with the lottery tickets… or else…
