“Ice cream, anyone?” I saw Jisoo raise a pint of ice cream as he entered the classroom. Girls began to head towards him to try and get the ice cream. I just sighed and leaned my head on the table. I was not in the mood to think about anything… let alone ice cream.

All of a sudden, I heard Jisoo's voice near me. “Hey. Why are you so sad?”  I raised my head. He was eating the ice cream he lifted a while ago. “Ice cream, cupcake?”

“No thanks. I’m not sad, just tired. Yeah, tired.”  He then showed his so worn-out pout to me.

“My cupcake is tired. Aww.”  He put the pint down and pulled me close to him. “I’ll drive you home now.”  He just received his car from his dad as a graduation gift since he was already 18 years of age and he could legally drive.

(Let's say Jisoo was just 18)

“But the classes?”

“Who cares? School is about to end babe.”

You read it right. School was almost over, just clearance and more weird stuffs before leaving the alma mater. Both of us were soon going to college. It had been exactly three weeks since my mom said that we were leaving. Of course it was because of my dad, mostly because he saw my dad again before she told me about the migration.

“You might not get your football scholarship in UCLA if you don’t attend your classes accordingly.”  I said as he tidied my things.

“Who cares?”

“I do.” He stopped to look at me then smiled sweetly.

“Well okay. I care for you too kiddo. But kiddo my scholarship is very sure. Whatever my grades may be this finals, UCLA will still admit me.”  He kissed my forehead. “And I am very happy about it because it is my dream to be a professional football player. And of course I’m happy because we will both study in the same town.”

I faked a smile. “Yes. It’s great.”  Deep inside my heart, I feel hurt. He, until now, didn’t have the slightest idea that I’d leave the town soon.

“So, are you still tired kiddo?”  He got the ice cream again and placed a spoonful ice cream in front of my mouth.

“I was. But I can be a walking smiley for you…”  I ate the ice cream and gave him a peck.

The teacher arrived and he went back to his seat. Time passed and all I thought was how I could tell Jisoo that I would not study in this town anymore—that I would migrate to other place, that he could not do anything to change my mind because my mother said so---it was all confusing.

“Ms. Kim?” I was back to my senses just as the teacher called me.

“Oh yes ma’am?”

“Are you okay? You look a little pale to me.” I touched my face, as if trying to put color to it.

“I am not pale. It’s just powder ma’am. I’ve applied too much.”

“Oh, you said so. So class I am leaving now because I have a meeting. Goodbye.”

I was in front of my locker when I felt hands over my eyes. “Oh, c’mon Jisoo stop it.”

“It isn’t Jisoo.”  The voice… it was Mino’s.

I hugged him instinctively. “I haven’t seen you for long eh? Where have you been Mr. Football star?” I wasn’t anxious around him. I literally forgot about everything and the gossipers really didn’t mind about the true story.

He laughed. “Just around the corner, Little Miss Naughty.”  He read the print on my shirt.

I chuckled. “I missed you.”

“Ha-ha. Whatever, naughty.”  I closed my locker and gave him the what-are-you-doing-here-look. “Hey, I just heard you are going to Connecticut to—”  I covered his mouth.

“Shhh.” I looked around to see if anyone heard him. “My gosh. Good thing no one’s here. Who told you?”

“Uh. Your mom. I talked to her this morning and she asked me to help you get in Univ. of Connecticut. You already passed their admission test but it’ll be better if we go there personally to ask your status.”

I inhaled. “Okay, sure. I’ll bring my things to our flat next week eh.”

“Hey bro, wassup?”  At the sound of the voice, my whole body stiffened.

“Hey Jisoo. Dude, I’m sorry again.”  They gave each other the manly hug.

“For the nth time Mino. Yes, yes.” Jisoo wrapped his arm around my shoulder. “So, what brings you here?”

“Oh—he just wanted to visit me, us.” I answered immediately trying to give Mino a hint. “You know, I missed him and he is so right timing.”

“Yes. Why don’t we go out? The three of us?”

“That’s a great idea Mino!” Jisoo just raised his eyebrows.

“Sure. I’ll just get my things in the boys' locker room.”

I wanted to faint as soon as Jisoo disappeared. I smiled at Mino. “Thanks.”

“You didn’t tell him, did you?”  I gestured a no.

“I didn’t want to ruin his future. Football is his life and I don’t want to be the cause of his shattered dreams. I’d rather be the martyr than he being the victim.”

We went to the mall to hang out. But before the sun set, I said goodbye and left them. I needed to talk to someone more important, well not more important. I needed to talk to someone about something more important.

“Hey.”

“Yes. What is the problem Jennie?” Nayeon sat on one of the swings in the playground.

“Just a favor Nayeon Do me a favor and let us be at least friends if not close sisters.”

“What favor Jennie dear?” She said, almost sarcastically.

“Take care of Jisoo and don’t leave him alone. That is all.”

There was a big smile plastered on her face.

“Sure, so are you two not a “couple” now?”

I inhaled deeply. “Soon.” She smirked and I suppose she was so happy.

It was my plan long before and there was no way I could bring back the words I just said. It hurt to let go of the love I treasured for a long time… But I believe that it was for the better—for the good of all.
